In this latest installment of versus Hal Jordan (the best Green Lantern in one man’s opinion) will take on Mars’ finest – J’onn J’onzz aka Martian Manhunter. Two founding members of the Justice League of America!!

I wanted to explain a little behind the Green Lantern’s powers before I started. It’s important to know about the Green Lantern ring and its power source. The rings all Lantern’s use is powered by a Power Battery, which in most cases takes the form of green light. It was created by the Guardians of the Universe to install order in a chaotic cosmos. The Power Battery gets all its energy and unlimited usage from the Central Power battery on Oa, homeland to the Guardians. The Power Battery acts as a conduit for all Green Lanterns to recharge their rings. I’ll speak more on its power later.

Hal Jordan first appeared in Showcase #22 in 1959. While not the first Green Lantern, that honor goes to Alan Scott, Hal is basically a reincarnation of Scott. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane he got his Lantern power from a dying alien named Abin Sur whose ship crashed on Earth. A test pilot, the ring sought out someone who was “utterly honest and born without fear” and it choose Hal. With the ring choosing Hal he automatically became a Green Lantern Corps member, a galactic police force. Hal has fought and won against Superman, Sinestro, fellow Lantern Kyle Rayner and many others. One of the strongest characters in comic book lore hands down!!

Each Lantern wears a ring that gives them all different powers and willpower and knowledge are the keys to maximum efficiency. The Green lantern’s rings is one of the most powerful weapons on Earth. Hal’s is one of the most power rings in the Green Lantern universe. The ring uses the pure energy supplied by the Power Battery to fire blasts of Oan energy or reproduce any weapon the Green Lantern him or herself can create in their mind. The will of the ring bearer plays a huge part in it’s strength. Hal’s ring can stagger the most powerful of opponents. The rings limitations are only in the mind of the individual wearing it. It can create force fields of various sizes or shapes and it protects the wearer from anything.

The primary function of the ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer’s thoughts into a weapon through the ring bearer’s will power. Anything created is made of the special green light energy and only works through the ring wearer’s willpower. The ring also allows penetration through solid walls, invisibility by bending light, create illusions, create a twin of oneself to confuse an enemy and can absorb energy from anything although said energy doesn’t power the ring itself it just steals from the opponent.

Another huge aspect of the ring is Flight. By manipulation of gravity and molecular movement, the ring allows the user to fly at speeds twice the speed of sound. It provides strength not necessarily for the user but the ring can pick up anything in excess of 100 tons!! It grants the wearer the power to use wormholes and warps to transport between time and space. The Guardians established a well known wormhole to Oa for obvious purposes. The ring is the only thing which allows access to it. The ring has allowed time travel in instances only where the user will not alter anything but it does have this capability.

While the ring does heal injuries, it can only work perfectly if the user has medical knowledge of some sort. Brains and willpower hold back certain Lantern’s and while Hal is very smart he’s no doctor so with his limited knowledge he can’t really use this aspect of the ring. The ring has the all knowing Book of Oa to draw upon when necessary a book that has knowledge far superior to any other. It can translate any language, has a GPS to unknown universes, a telepathic link to only the wearer so if stolen then no big deal. You can see the power of this weapon, like I said before one of the most powerful in the universe.

The Green Lantern suit is anything but it’s made from the ring when the user wants to use his or her Lantern powers. It automatically appears over any clothing when in use and suits can be adjusted at any time. Any “suit” has an emergency beacon to all Lanterns when an individual is in distress and a homing device to find where they are.

His opponent is Martian Manhunter aka J’onn J’onzz who first appeared in Detective Comics #225 and was created by Joseph Samachson and Joe Certa. Originally created as a bad guy he’s come a long way toward being the superhero that we know today. He’s defeated some heavy weights in his time including Superman (having the same powers and more), Supergirl, Doosmday and one Darkseid.! The Darkseid one is astounding because nobody defeats him!! Manhunter is the last known Mars survivor and was once called by Superman the most powerful being on Earth. He’s the Swiss army knife of heroes and shares many of the same powers with Superman.

J’onn’s powers come from his alien physiology. Born on Mars over a millennium ago from an advanced civilization boasting advanced technology he is genetically modified with incredible powers. He can change his mass, color, shape and is extremely flexible and durable. He does not need to eat like a human nor drink anything. He controls his body’s molecular structure so his shape-shifting ability is different to most. He has no limit to people he can imitate or voices he can reproduce. From house fly to skyscraper he can do it all. His ability to become invisible to any light or eye is different than most invisibility. He can make himself invisible even on the electromagnetic spectrum, including infrared or UV lighting. His body is not affected by this, it’s natural to his race.

He can phase through any solid matter no limits on anything. Shifting his mass into another dimension while he phases is alien, not possible for any human beings. He is the strongest being on Earth even stronger than the Hulk at full capacity. It comes from his plasmorphic structure formed from long and complex molecular chains, augmented with his psionic and telekinetic abilities allowing him to lift anything. He’s draw blood from Krytonians and can lift 500 tons without breaking a sweat. Manhunter’s stamina is well known as he doesn’t get tired mentally or physically and the extent to his stamina is unknown to man. His regenerative ability is that even if he has body parts chopped off he can fix them in a matter of minutes because of his molecular control.

His ability to fly great distances at top speeds (7 miles per second, the escape velocity of Earth) and fly in space are huge aspects to this battle. He’s not tied to Earth so he can take the fight anywhere. He has speed that is just a notch below Superman in terms of fighting and is a tick behind the Flash in running speed. He has nine different senses which account for his precognitive abilities.

His Martian vision can cause considerable damage. It allows him to see spectrum’s of light not visible to anyone else and shoot a bolt force strong enough to take down the biggest of bad guys. His telepathy is THE most powerful on the planet, stronger than Jean Grey, Professor X etc. He can read the mind of any human/mutant in the universe and also reading their subconscious! He can scan any mind on Earth in a matter of minutes and can mind wipe anyone from any distance. Along with his considerable brain power he can move objects with his mind. His control of his body gives him a considerable advantage over anyone in my opinion. His genius level intellect is one of many reasons he co-founded the Justice League.

In this battle of the Titans it was a very difficult choice, both seemingly impossible to defeat. I have to pick a winner though and I am going with Martian Manhunter!! While I may catch flack for this, his mental capacity rules over any Green Lantern ring power. He can take the fight anywhere and his flexibility make him a difficult opponent! This one could change a few times in a best of 10 series but majority of the wins go to Martian Manhunter in my opinion.
