Back in mid-November 2016, the Mighty Reds were widely tipped for Premier League glory this season.
Having scored 40 goals in 14 games, we were having our best start in 121 years. Fast-forward to 2017 and defeats at the hands of Sunderland and Leicester City and it looks like we won’t even make the top four at this rate.
Jurgen Klopp is right to say that inconsistency is our problem. He’s also correct in saying that this inconsistency “doesn’t make sense”. Can the German help us salvage something this season? Let’s take a look…
Upcoming fixtures
By beating the Gunners 3-4 away at the start of the season and having now done the double over them and we’ve showed that we are more than able of competing with the best in the league.
Despite our recent form, we usually pull it out of the bag against the better teams. It’s worth pointing out that we’ve got Man City coming up on the 18th of March.

Top four
It’s safe to say Chelsea have the league title wrapped up this season. Manchester United (I can hardly bear writing that name) are in fifth and one point behind us with a game in hand. Having not lost in the Premier League since October, they might be on course to overtake us.
Arsenal are also inconsistent and the fans are calling for Wenger to be sacked. Yet it’s worth noting that the north London club have never finished outside the top four under Wenger.
That leaves Spurs and Manchester City. Although these teams have shown signs of weakness this season, both are surely too good to finish lower than fourth. If we can regain the form we had at the start of the season, we could be in with a chance of a Champions League place, but at the moment the prospects don’t look good.
