THE DETAILS

Venue – Anfield, Liverpool

Referee – Andre Marriner

Date & Time – Saturday, September 14th @ 12:30

Current Odds – Liverpool 1/7, Draw 7/1, Newcastle United 14/1

The dreaded international break is over and real football returns to Anfield on Saturday. Liverpool plays Newcastle United in the early kick-off in a game Jurgen Klopp’s side is hugely tipped to win.

Anything less than three points will be viewed as a huge missed opportunity for The Reds, yet Newcastle has already sprung one surprise this season with the win at Spurs in August.

FORM

Liverpool Form

It’s now 13 consecutive Premier League wins for Jurgen Klopp’s Mentality Monsters. Liverpool sits atop of the table – two points ahead of Manchester City – as the only team with a 100% record after four league games.

The Reds have a big week with a trip to Napoli coming up after this Newcastle game. However, all focus must be on the domestic fixture as The Reds make another push for their 19th league title success.

Newcastle Form

Life hasn’t been easy for Steve Bruce since his arrival. Despite a memorable 1-0 victory at Spurs late last month, The Magpies have really struggled to find their feet this term.

They are 14th in the league and already out of the League Cup so Bruce knows he needs to get his men fit and firing in order to keep him in a job past December.

TEAM NEWS

Liverpool Team News

Touchwood – it seems that Liverpool has come through this international break unscathed with no reported injuries for any players.

Jurgen Klopp is without Alisson and Naby Keita while Nathaniel Clyne won’t be back in action until the new year.

James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may well start against Newcastle – as they did at Southampton – due to Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum both playing two internationals over the last week.

In attack, we should be at full strength with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané raring to go as Egypt and Senegal did not play on this break.

I expect Joel Matip to keep his place alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Newcastle Team News

Steve Bruce has something of an injury crisis to deal with at Newcastle at the moment.

Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin, Andy Carroll, DeAndre Yedlin, Dwight Gayle, Florian Lejeune and Jack Colback are all ruled out of the trip to Anfield this weekend.

Bruce has been using a 5-4-1 shape with Newcastle so far in 2019/20. Expect more of the same on Saturday.

PREDICTED LINEUPS

Liverpool XI (4-3-3) – Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Firmino, Mané

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1) – Dubravka; Krafth, Schar, Shelvey, Dummett, Willems, Almiron, Hayden, Longstaff, Atsu, Joelinton

WHEN THEY LAST MET

Liverpool took six points from Newcastle last season. The Reds won 4-0 at Anfield on Boxing Day and 3-2 at St James’ Park in May. Mohamed Salah scored in both of those wins.

PREDICTION

Liverpool 3 – 0 Newcastle United

It should be a straightforward home win for Liverpool. Yes, Newcastle won at Spurs but Jurgen Klopp’s side is a different proposition altogether for The Magpies.

Expect goals from Salah and Sadio Mané as Liverpool maintain their 100% start to the campaign.
