The Transfer Show: Slot, Alonso and Liverpool’s Summer Crossroads

Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. They explore how Xabi Alonso’s availability is shaping supporter opinion, the divide between UK-based reporting and European speculation, and why Liverpool appear determined to wait until the summer before making any managerial decision. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. “And we’re off!” – Liverpool’s Race for Top Four

Amid the meritorious hyperboles circulating around numerous timelines on social media, be it Twitter or Facebook, there is a considerable amount to be joyous about at the moment. After the dark days of December; the perpetual post-weekend depression after another dismal Liverpool display and the crushing notion of missing out on fourth - Brendan's "Tricky...

How Brendan’s Pre-Season Resolutions Are Starting To Come To Fruition

Whether it was due to the millions of pounds spent on recruits in the summer, or the fact that our deadly front man Daniel Sturridge was missing for nearly five months, Liverpool did not resume where they left off last season following the exit of the ever-iconic (and troublesome) Luis Suarez. Queue the 'Rodgers Out'...

Five Fingers Became a Fist of Liverpool Unity

Tuesday 9th December, the game finishes 1-1 at Anfield and Liverpool are knocked out of the Champions League after a pitiful display. Coutinho, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Lallana and Markovic all started the game on the bench. The knives were truly out for Brendan Rodgers. I have to admit, I was reaching out for the meat cleaver...

Analysing the Perks of a False 9 Against Man City

A magnificent Liverpool team performance against Manchester City saw The Reds cement themselves as a genuine challenger for the top 4. Wonder goals from the ever irrepressible Phillipe Coutinho and the energetic Jordan Henderson rightly got the plaudits, but one player that impressed me immensely yesterday was Raheem Sterling. Leading the line for Liverpool, the...

Liverpool FC: Time for Tunnel Vision?

After being knocked out by eventual-winners Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-finals and subsequently by Besiktas in the Europa League, Liverpool were suddenly left with only one remaining cup competition to fight for. The Reds being in the quarter-finals of the magical, domestic FA Cup already means that there’s no reason why they...

The Future of the 3-4-2-1: An Analysis

Having conquered Spain, Europe, and the eventually the World, Pep Guardiola was quick to shake things up with his Barcelona side. Once things become static, success slips away. Pass into the space, not the player's feet. Move the ball, move your team mate, move the opposition. The evolution of Barca's formation from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 (with...

The Future of the Right Wing Back role at Liverpool

With March just around the corner it may seem a little early to start thinking about potential summer signings, but with Glen Johnson looking like he's rejecting a new deal and Javi Manquillo not getting a look in after some good early season form The Reds may be in the market for a right...

Besiktas v Liverpool | Europa League Knockout Stage – 2nd Leg

A goal ahead on aggregate.  A clean sheet at home that’s vital to the cause.  A Champions League spot remains the final prize. A return to hallowed grounds. The result of the last match tries to proclaim slim margins, but anyone watching last week knows that wasn’t the case.  Liverpool maintained a quality amount of possession...

Personnel Over System – Why the Current Form?

"It's the new defensive coach that we got in that everybody thought we needed. That has done the trick" - Brendan Rodgers after the win at Southampton. Basking in his own glory post-Southampto similarly to a man embracing the smell of his own fart. We witnessed a very smug Brendan Rodgers deliver that quote with a...

The Real Costs of Forming a Grassroots Team

Grassroots football is a popular weekend events; millions participate in these teams each year as a way to have fun and keep fit. Grassroots football teams do require certain costs and guidelines.  Knowing the expenditures will help in fundraising efforts in order to get the team of the field to play. In fact, organizers and...

Liverpool FC: Achievement Unlocked

We have all gone through games where we struggle at Level 47, or some other game where we are stuck at Level 82 and are awaiting a cheat code to crack the game. The pre-game emotions yesterday felt something like that. Chelsea at home against Burnley drop 2 points. Matic out for 3 games - FOR...

Simon Mignolet: Thou Shall Not Pass

On a popular football management game - the one inventively titled Football Manager - the attribute for a goalkeeper’s distribution with feet is called “kicking”, not “passing”. This crude definition of one of the footballing aspects of a goalkeepers' game, indicates that there’s still some way to go before they’re considered the eleventh outfield...

A Career Resurgence For Mario Balotelli?

Mario Balotelli is well known for his attitude problems and lack of effort during football matches. When Liverpool signed the Italian in the summer transfer window, everyone knew it was going to be a gamble, would Mario play well for Liverpool or would he refuse to provide a pressing style of play? Throughout the season...

Sean Connery, Winners and Mario Balotelli

Mason: Are you sure you're ready for this? Goodspeed: I'll do my best. Mason: Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and f*ck the prom queen! When the squabble happened over who would take the penalty at Anfield I like many watching it unfold had a range of conflicting thoughts and...

Bogey Teams | The Epitome of Liverpool’s Frustration

For the centuries that this magnificent sport has been played, there is always that ‘one team’. The team that gets you so spontaneously dazzled as to why you can’t seem to break them down. From Tenerife to Real Madrid or Dundee Utd to FC Barcelona, everybody’s had one. Liverpool of course, being the wonderfully...

Pjanic outside of the box or Can Liverpool add a touch of Clasie?

The link to Miralem Pjanic is a welcomed one. No doubt it's just a rumour but to be linked to someone of that quality is refreshing. I'm not convinced the numbers being quoted are that accurate, they seem steep but what'd you expect when the story is made up. However, there is sense in making...

The Rotational Conundrum for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool

You really can’t help being a tad hopeful and optimistic about the Reds’ recent change of fortunes. The Reds are now the team in form, so says pundits, as well as our very own bloggers and podcasters alike. Critics who had their teeth gnashing at Rodgers’ failure to address gaping issues that got us...

The Sturridge Effect

Selhurst Park hadn't been a welcoming theatre for Liverpool FC for the best part of twenty years, before Saturday night. The last Liverpool player to score a goal, for a winning side, at the home of Crystal Palace was none other than Oyvind Leonhardson, way back in December of 1997. Perhaps, therefore, there may well...

Liverpool v Besiktas | Europa League Preview

Don’t mention the Champions League... ...except perhaps when giving a timely reminder that this season will be the first in which the winners of the Europa League gain automatic qualification for Europe’s premier competition the following season. Would it be better for Liverpool to concentrate their efforts solely on the league and attempt to qualify via finishing...

(Raheem Can’t Get No) Satisfaction | Sterling Contract Saga

As the seemingly annual Raheem Sterling contract saga drags on into another week, it’s worth taking in the following quote from one of the best man-managers the game has seen: "You can't be satisfied just because you've achieved something. Satisfaction is the biggest enemy of an athlete." Ottmar Hitzfeld Brendan Rodgers’ approach to these situations aligns well...

The Liverpool Screw Job | Lovren Vs Sakho

The Liverpool changing room. Morale is high after the late Tottenham win but that's not enough for Brendan Rodgers. The owners are in town and he needs to make an impression. Brendan: "Listen, lads, fantastic effort tonight. It's a great win, you all showed great technical ability. Even you, Dejan, you made no mistakes when...

Coutinho’s Top Moments So far & Areas for Improvement

The 2015 January transfer window was a pretty dull one to say the least. Whether it was due to the lack of abusive fans outside stadiums on deadline day, or Liverpool's subdued business done on the in-comings end remains to be known. That was, of course, until around half-an-hour prior to the eleven o'clock...

Crystal Palace v Liverpool | FA Cup Fifth Round Preview

Oh, Palace.  How you’ve become the bane of Liverpool’s existence lately.  Selhurst Park is no friendly place to play for any side, but we’ve performed worse there than any other ground.  If you can even believe it, we’ve traveled there six times since 2000, and haven’t won once (0W-2D-4L).  If Brendan Rodgers is adamant...

Memoirs of a Brendan Rodgers Disciple

August 31st 2014 I knew it. I bloody well knew it! “Brendan Rodgers relied on Luis Suarez for the success of last season” they said. HA! Be the Lord, the Reds were as good as last year today. Liverpool went to White Hart Lane and told Tottenham “we are just better than you lot.” And...

A Curious Case of Deja Vu for Liverpool FC

I'm sure many of you have been in a similar situation. You've been planning this moment for a while, you've ran through the situation in your head a vast amount of times and you're bordering on arrogance at how sure you are it'll be a success. You don't plan for a mishap, why would...

Jordon Ibe – The Future of Liverpool

Liverpool are renowned for generating a variety of prolific, promising young players either by purchasing them for extremely low prices or through the academy. As of late, a young player that has caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers and most Liverpool fans is Jordon Ibe, an English 19 year old who is well known...

The Liverpool Triumvirate | Overview of Sakho, Can, Skrtel et al

With the exception of relegation battlers, you would be hard-pressed to find a defence in the league that has come under the same level of scrutiny as Liverpool. Whether it’s Neville or Carragher on a Monday night, or the ingenious Alan Shearer perceptively offering some of his innovative, ever-insightful though perpetually crap “analysis” on...
