Liverpool Transfer News: Finn Jeltsch Battle Shows Scale of Defensive Rebuild
Liverpool are looking ahead again, and that tells you plenty. Clubs at the top do not wait for a problem to become urgent, they try to get there first. According to Ekrem Konur, Liverpool are among a cluster of elite sides tracking VfB Stuttgart centre-back Finn Jeltsch ahead of a possible summer move.
This is the sort of market Liverpool now operate in. If a young defender looks ready for the top level, everyone arrives at once. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Inter Milan are all said to be in the frame. That is not background noise, that is the reality of chasing one of the Bundesliga’s most highly rated young defenders.
Jeltsch, still only 20, has already established himself in Stuttgart’s side and has done it in a league that does not hand out reputations for free. He is playing regularly, developing quickly, and attracting precisely the kind of interest you would expect when a modern centre-back combines age, composure and upside. Stuttgart’s valuation, reported at €50m to €60m, feels steep at first glance, but it is also the going rate when several major clubs believe they are buying years of top-level performance.

👀 Reports suggest a potential transfer fee in the region of €50–60M.

Finn Jeltsch interest fits Liverpool recruitment plan
Liverpool’s recruitment over recent windows has been aggressive and expensive. More than £650m has gone out across the past three windows, which makes one thing clear, the club are still reshaping the squad rather than merely topping it up. In that context, another move for a young central defender would make complete sense.
There are obvious reasons. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both entering the final year of their contracts, while concerns around Giovanni Leoni’s fitness add another layer of uncertainty. You do not leave that sort of situation to chance. If Liverpool believe Jeltsch can become elite, they will explore it.
Bundesliga wonderkid will command major fee
Liverpool have already shown they are prepared to invest heavily in this profile. Jeremy Jacquet arrived for £60m after an agreement was struck in advance, and that deal has quickly looked justified. If the club decide Jeltsch is the next one, a similar structure could be possible, with an agreement reached early and the player arriving later.
That said, this is where blunt reality matters. Liverpool may like the player, but so do half of Europe’s heavyweights. In auctions like this, admiration is cheap, execution is everything. If Julian Ward and the recruitment team push forward, they will need conviction, speed and a clear pitch. Otherwise, they risk watching another top talent go elsewhere.
Our View
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report is intriguing because it points to planning, not panic. That is how it should be. The defence clearly needs refreshing, and while supporters will always dream about ready-made superstars, there is something smarter about identifying a 20-year-old who could grow into the role over several seasons.
Jeltsch sounds exactly like the sort of target that should interest Liverpool. Young, already battle-tested in the Bundesliga, and wanted by serious clubs. If Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona are paying attention, there is probably a reason. That does not guarantee success, but it does suggest Liverpool’s scouts are looking in the right places.
The key question is timing. If Van Dijk and Gomez are both nearing the end of their deals, Liverpool cannot drift. The club need clarity on contracts and clarity on succession. Supporters have seen what happens when planning in key positions slips, and nobody wants to go into another season with uncertainty at centre-back.
There is also a wider point here. Liverpool under Andoni Iraola need defenders who can cope in space, defend aggressively and grow with the team. If Jeltsch fits that brief, then paying a premium could be justified. It would not be cheap, and the competition would be brutal, but Liverpool are supposed to be shopping in this market. That is what top clubs do.
