Kornmayer & Nemmer – Liverpool’s Best Signing of the Summer

On the 12th of April, in the midst of Liverpool Football Club’s hectic schedule during the latter stages of season’s past, Liverpool hijacked Bayern Munich’s backroom staff. Andreas Kornmayer, now Head of Fitness and Conditioning for the Reds was to move to Merseyside, joining Jurgen Klopp to make his players the fittest in the league. About a month later, Liverpool once again pinched nutritionist Mona Nemmer from the German Champions.

Klopp made significant changes to his backroom staff over the summer period. Apart from Kornmayer and Nemmer’s arrival, Chris Morgan, who has been at the club for ten years, has been relieved of his duties, with Andy Renshaw being promoted from the U21s by the manager.

But Nemmer and Kornmayer, in my opinion, have been the best summer signings for Liverpool during the window. The acquisition of both whom are experts in their respective fields have played a significant part on the fitness of the players.

Kornmayer has worked with Bayern Munich for 12 years under an array of managers from Van Gaal, Heynckes, and Pep Guardiola. He started off with the youth players of his hometown club, climbing up the ranks before being promoted to the first team in 2010.

When Kornmayer arrived, Klopp hailed him as “an absolute mastermind in all things that he will do for us, an experienced guy who’s worked with the best teachers and the best players. Education and experience are the most important things in this job and he combines these two things in the perfect way. He fits together perfectly in our coaching team”. Thomas Muller as well came out and praised the club’s new Head of Fitness, saying that Kornmayer “transformed me from a slow snail into a speedy snail!”

Mona Nemmer, has been lauded more recently from Liverpool’s skipper. Jordan Henderson mentioned that the players were eating well prior to her arrival, but the quality of food has gone to another level. Here are a few of his words:

“We all ate well anyway. But since Mona came in, I think it has gone to another level – the food we’ve been having is unbelievable. In pre-season, I couldn’t believe it – we’re getting a bit spoilt, actually. She’s been world class, making sure we’re getting the right food in after games, the protein shakes we have… everything, everything is covered nutritionally.”

Liverpool are sitting top of the league after smashing Watford 6-1 at Anfield prior to the international break. The team is tiring their opponents thanks to how Jurgen Klopp is imprinting a style onto his players. But the relentless attacking we witness every week has a lot to do with the development of our players’ fitness, which you could say, is down to Kornmayer, Nemmer, and the overhaul of the club’s medical staff.

Klopp’s Reds have covered the most distance this season in the league, covering 1282.4km, which averages about 116.5km per90 minutes, meanwhile Manchester United, covered the least distance in the league so far, with 1166km. Even Sunderland, who sit at the bottom of the table have covered more distance than Jose Mourinho’s super team.

We’ve had players who arrived in the summer that provided such incredible and immediate impact to the club, namely Sadio Mane, who’s been a sensation in our attack, and Joel Matip the rock in our defence; but the staff behind the curtains making sure these players get all the nutrition, are provided with excellent training regimes, surely deserves some praise for the work they’ve done for the players, helping them reach their most peak physical condition in order for them to perform at the best of their abilities on the pitch.
