Liverpool 1 Manchester City 0 - Player Ratings

Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City was a big step in their title bid, confirming the progress they have made this season.

Simon Mignolet – 7

Did well when called upon and kept Liverpool ticking with his distribution. Not much to complain about since he took up the reigns from Karius.

Nathaniel Clyne – 7

Clyne is perhaps one of the most underrated members of the squad. He has made a real difference down the right-hand side and did so against City’s attack. Once again, he gave an attacking edge to the Reds.

Ragnar Klavan – 8

Klavan has done extremely well since coming in for the injured Joel Matip. The Estonian has shown his experience in abundance, and dealt well with Aguero throughout the match.

Dejan Lovren – 8

Lovren, often criticised for his inconsistency this season, put in a solid display for the Reds when it counted most. He has established a strong partnership with Klavan in the absence of Klopp’s main man and all reds will have been pleased to see him step up in such a crucial game.

James Milner – 8

Completely dominant over former Liverpool player Raheem Sterling, Milner’s performance typified how he has performed since joining the Reds. His experience and grit in an unnatural position has been outstanding for Klopp’s side.

Jordan Henderson – 8

Liverpool’s captain was dominant in the middle of the park, throwing tackles in left, right and centre. Displaying so much energy, Henderson was always closing down the space for City and his role has become increasingly important.

Emre Can – 7

His physicality was useful throughout the match, though he offered little in the way of attack barring a curling shot that was wide.

Adam Lallana – 9

Lallana has been Liverpool’s star man this season and is always the one called upon. Providing yet another assist, this time for Wijnaldum, he made another key contribution to Liverpool. He also played a key role in the second-half in dealing with City’s pressure.

Gini Wijnaldum – 9

Underrated and under-appreciated are words that best describe Wijnaldum since he joined Liverpool. However, scoring the only goal of the match will have done the midfielder wonders in terms of gaining plaudits amongst fans. He has been the person that makes this side tick, making a huge contribution each game while going under the radar. Finally, he’s getting recognition.

Sadio Mané – 7

It was a rather quiet performance considering the impact Mané has made since joining Liverpool. However, his energy and attacking threat did pose a problem to City.

Roberto Firmino – 7

Pressing was the key today, and Firmino was at the heart of it. It’s probably the reason he’s chosen over Sturridge, and it was so clear why it’s key to Klopp’s style of play tonight. Firmino is the first line of defence for the Reds, and he certainly played his part in keeping City at bay.

I am confused. Surely you have got the score wrong? We can not possibly have beaten City as you must remember that Rahim Sterling has been outspoken on several occasions. Outspoken that he left us to ‘play with a higher grade of player than those I played with at Anfield’. So I ask again surely you have the wrong score!

  2. Well done giving some love to Lovren and Klavan. There was a reason that Sergio Agüero’s sole contribution consisted of a left-footed shot that moved so slowly to Mignolet that a butterfly could have come to rest on it. The two Center Backs were nothing short of brilliant.

Thank you for writing. I think Milner is over rated. He has immediate assistance at every sign of danger. He’s due the clean sheet credit but is clearly the weak link. Can is my fav but you’re right he didn’t do much.

Everyone has an opinion @ Jise and I won’t discredit yours as I’m a firm believer that Locus or Lucas as people like to call his is a waste of space but surely Milner is our best option at left back at this time and has performed as one of our best defenders getting through a serious work load and producing some seriously good performances. Oh and yes I call him LOCUS and not even in his preferred position should he be first second or third choice in my humble opinion
