Liverpool visit Manchester City on Thursday aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League standings.

The Reds hold a six-point advantage over second-placed Tottenham Hotspur heading into the game, with the reigning champions a further point behind in third.

The home side will be without defenders Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for the game, but James Milner is back in contention after returning to training this week.

City are sweating on the fitness of midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after he missed the victory over Southampton with a muscle problem.

Fabian Delph will miss the game through suspension, while Benjamin Mendy and Claudio Bravo remain on the sidelines.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last four meetings with City in all competitions, winning three and drawing one of those matches.

They were crushed 5-0 in the corresponding fixture back in September, but gained their revenge with a 4-3 success in the return game.

They also won their two Champions League meetings later in the campaign on the way to the final of that competition.

This season’s first meeting between the two sides ended 0-0, with Riyad Mahrez’s late penalty miss costing City the chance of victory.

Liverpool have been in superb form in the league over the past two months, smashing 27 goals on their way to nine wins in a row.

City have wobbled in recent weeks, losing twice over Christmas, but they bounced back to form with a 3-1 success at St Mary’s over the weekend.

With games against Brighton & Hove Albion (A), Crystal Palace (H) and Leicester City (H) to follow during January, Liverpool have a golden opportunity to put some distance between themselves and their title rivals over the next few weeks.

City will be eager to jump back up into second place and close the gap to just four points, making Thursday’s game the most important of the season to date.

Predicted starting line-ups:

Man City: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko, Bernardo, Fernandinho, Silva, Sterling, Aguero, Sane.

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Fabinho, Mane, Salah, Firmino.

Man City vs Liverpool Betting Tips

Mohamed Salah has scored 13 Premier League goals this season. Bet on the forward to get on the score first with 138.com at 5/1.

The two sides have scored 102 league goals between them this term. Over 4.5 goals in the match is priced at 16/5.

City are priced at 21/20 to win the match, with Liverpool on offer at 5/2. However, a tight game looks likely and the draw looks the best bet at odds of 11/4.
