Jordan Henderson put in one of his best performances of the season against Bayern Munich at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp acknowledged his captain’s impact on the game.
It certainly was a captain’s display from Henderson as he broke up many FC Bayern attacks from his place at the base of The Reds’ midfield.
The former Sunderland midfielder was involved in almost everything positive from a Liverpool point of view. When he wasn’t breaking up German counter-attacks, Henderson was spreading the ball nicely from side to side with precision.
Always on hand to take the ball from Joel Matip or Fabinho, Henderson then looked to get Liverpool moving by getting Trent Alexander-Arnold or Andy Robertson involved on the ball down the flanks.
Klopp, speaking to BT Sport after the game, had this to say about his captain’s performance:
“A clean sheet without the big man – probably not a lot of people would have expected that. That was very good.
“Defending, in general, was good. And of course, Hendo did a brilliant job there, it was unbelievable how many balls he won back and stuff like that.
“It was a fantastic game from him – but that’s actually what we expect as well.”
Henderson’s display has certainly given Klopp a nice selection headache ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford this Sunday. With Virgil van Dijk returning at centre-back, Fabinho will be freed up to play his own natural position as a ‘number six’. However, Henderson didn’t exactly play like someone who deserved to be dropped.
Might Klopp decide to rest Joel Matip for the United game and play Fabinho at centre-half again but this time beside Van Dijk? It’s certainly a possibility given how comfortable Fabinho looked in central defence against FC Bayern.
