Player Ratings as Liverpool Lift the Super Cup

Liverpool win yet another European trophy; becoming a bit boring this, isn’t it? It was a long way away from a great performance, but the lads got the job done in the end. Adrian was the hero as he saved Tammy Abraham’s penalty in the shootout which will undoubtedly do his confidence the world of good as he continues to deputise for the injured Alisson. The only downside was the fact we had to travel thousands of miles to play 120 minutes when we have a match on Saturday afternoon. Fingers crossed everyone will remain healthy following the weekend with all the football in their legs added to their lack of fitness.

Adrian: 8

Made some very good stops and should never have had a penalty awarded against him. VAR has a lot to answer for after that one. Made the match-winning save in the shootout, a dream start to his Liverpool career.

Gomez: 4.5

Struggled defensively throughout the majority of the game. Was far too easy for the likes of Pulisic to get in behind him. Offered very little going forward compared to what we’re used to with Trent, which hampered our attack.

 Matip: 6.5

Did pretty well in defence, continuing where he left off last season. However, he was unusually wasteful in possession with a number of loose passes in the second half.

Van Dijk: 7

Defended relatively well for the entirety of the game and played a couple of nice long balls to the front 3.

Robertson: 4.5 (off at start of ET)

A nice bit of last-ditch defending on Pedro wasn’t enough to prevent a very low rating. Was dreadful on the ball until he was replaced by Alexander-Arnold at the beginning of extra-time.

Fabinho: 6

Seemed as though he was playing in midfield on his own for large portions of the first half and understandably struggled. Was better after the break.

Milner: 4 (off at 63 mins)

A really poor performance from Milner. Was awful defensively and equally as bad in possession. Looked knackered from minute one.

Henderson: 4

Third shocker in a row, not a good start to the season at all. Was pitiful defensively and an absolute disgrace on the ball, both from open play and set pieces. Have some sympathy for him seeing as Naby was set to start.

Oxlade-Chamberlain: 5.5 (off at HT)

The first half wasn’t easy for the Liverpool attack and he has rarely played on the wing in the last couple of years. Can’t criticise him too much.

Mane: 8 (off at 103 mins)

Scored two goals, what more can you say? The second was a sublime finish and to contribute so heavily despite his severe lack of pre-season is astonishing.

Salah: 6.5

Not his most influential game but was always a threat. Just him being on the pitch is enough sometimes.

 Firmino: 7.5 (on at HT)

Completely changed the game when he came on and instantly contributed by assisting Mane’s first goal. Quietened down a bit as the game went on but was still able to supply another assist for Mane’s second. A very impressive performance on the whole.

Gini: 6 (on at 64 mins)

Came on. Did a bit of Wijnaldum-ing.

Trent: 6 (on at start of ET)

Did a better job than Gomez on that right-hand side.

Origi: 6 (on at 103 mins)

Allowed Mane to come off.
