Liverpool’s Sadio Mané says The Reds will push on to break whatever records they can this season despite securing Premier League title success last week.
Jürgen Klopp’s side won the title last Thursday night after Manchester City failed to win at Chelsea. Huge celebrations followed for Klopp, the squad and the backroom staff, as they basked in the glory of ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait for another league championship victory.
Now, though, Sadio Mané insists Klopp and the team know they still have much to play for in their remaining seven games.
Liverpool have already broken the record for winning the league at the earliest stage – with 7 games left, beating Manchester United’s previous record of winning it with 5 games remaining – but Mané claims they will not rest on their laurels.
The Reds have Manchester City’s 100-points record haul on their radar and are likely to go all out to surpass that total, starting at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Mané said:
“… we don’t have to stop and we won’t stop for sure after being champion. I think it’s another step of our careers and what we want to achieve so I can say for myself, it’s part of us and it’s the past now so we have to make sure we [carry on]. Records in football are always there to beat so for sure we want to achieve again something special after being champion.”
When asked about Thursday night’s fixture, the Senegal international was clear about how important this fixture, and every fixture, is for The Reds between now and the end of the campaign.
“It’s going to be a really, really good game [and] for us there are no excuses, we have to do everything possible to win it because now we have seven games. We are going to take it game by game and try to win all of them because it’s our dream and really important for us.”
Liverpool are currently on 86 points after 31 league games. Another 15 points are needed from their remaining 7 fixtures to set a new Premier League points-total record.
