Liverpool’s star midfielder, Luis Diaz, has faced an unspeakable tragedy. News has emerged via Sky Sports that his parents were abducted in Colombia, seemingly targeted by gunmen on motorbikes.
Mother Rescued, Father Still Missing
Luis Diaz’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was fortunately rescued during a police operation in Barrancas, as confirmed by Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro. On Twitter, the President mentioned: “In a padlock operation in Barrancas, Luis Diaz’s mother has been rescued, we continue the search for the father.”
However, his father’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Extensive Search Operations Underway
General William Salamanca, the director of the country’s police force, has shared that every possible resource is being utilised in the ongoing search for Diaz’s father.
From initial reports, it’s believed that the couple was ambushed while they were at a petrol station, travelling in a truck, by the armed kidnappers.
Colombia’s Response to the Incident
The Colombian Football Federation has voiced its concerns over the event, stating: “The Colombian Football Federation rejects the security situation that the parents of our player Luis Diaz are going through.” The statement further read: “From the FCF, we express our solidarity with him and his entire family, and we call for the relevant authorities to act as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.”
Moreover, Colombia’s General Prosecutor’s Office has set a specialist team in motion to get to the bottom of the incident and ensure the safe return of Diaz’s father. Their statement shed light on their efforts, highlighting the collaboration of the CTI officials, police, and military.
