Gakpo’s New Deal Highlights Slot’s Faith Amid Summer Transfer Tensions
Cody Gakpo admits he came close to a move away from Anfield this summer, with Bayern Munich showing firm interest before opting for a different direction. Yet, as the transfer window dust settles, Liverpool supporters may well consider his contract extension as one of the club’s most important pieces of business in 2025.
Gakpo’s Liverpool journey so far
The Dutch forward joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for an initial £34.5 million fee, rising to £44.3m with add-ons. His first few months brought flashes of quality rather than consistency, but under fellow countryman Arne Slot he has evolved into a central figure.

Liverpool announced a new deal for Gakpo running until 2030, a show of commitment that places him firmly in the club’s long-term planning. Speaking about the summer transfer speculation, the 26-year-old told ESPN Netherlands that Bayern Munich held talks but turned their attention elsewhere.
“From what I understand, Bayern did come, but they ended up buying Luis Diaz,” Gakpo said. “A transfer window like this can be hectic and stressful for a player. I don’t have that problem anymore.”
The clarity offered by the extension has clearly lifted him. “I told the club that I’m happy, and my family is happy in England. We feel at home, and that’s very important besides the football itself.”
Slot’s attacking options deepen
Slot now has an enviable attacking pool. Alongside Gakpo, Liverpool can call upon Mohamed Salah, new arrival Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa. Such depth offers rotation possibilities across four competitions, with the Dutch coach stressing adaptability as a key element of his system.
Gakpo’s decision to stay fits Liverpool’s broader transfer policy. At 26, he is entering his peak years, making his retention a logical priority. Conversely, the £60.7m Bayern deal for Diaz represented smart business, given the Colombian’s contract situation and wage demands.
