Liverpool could be handed major blow in pursuit of £65m January signing

After a terrible few months on the pitch, Liverpool fans had been excited about the prospect of new arrivals in January.

One name has been mentioned more than any other and that is AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.

The 25-year-old has a £65m release clause active in the winter window and Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move.

However, the latest report from Paul Joyce of The Times suggests that the Reds could be handed a serious blow in their chances of signing the forward…

Man City ready to pounce

According to the report, Man City are ‘exploring’ the possibility of triggering the £65m release clause to sign Semenyo.

“Man City are considering triggering Antoine Semenyo’s £65m release clause in January,” said the report.

“Liverpool have also been linked with the 25-year-old.”

“City have not yet fully committed to making a move for Semenyo, but there is a feeling in some quarters that his arrival in January could give them an edge.”

Liverpool’s need for a forward

Despite spending £450m in the summer on new arrivals, Liverpool’s front-line is seriously struggling.

The £250m duo of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are still yet to register a goal contribution in the Premier League between them.

Only Igor Thiago and Erling Haaland has more goal involvements than Semenyo so far this season.

The 25-year-old would add depth and quality beyond Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah on both flanks.
