Wirtz Admits Tough Liverpool Start

Florian Wirtz has endured a testing first season at Liverpool, but the German insists his belief remains intact.

“No regrets at all,” he says speaking to James Pearce of The Athletic. “I’m still happy to be here. I have big goals for next season, because this season hasn’t gone as planned.”

Signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £100million, potentially rising to £116million, Wirtz arrived with huge expectation. Seven goals and eight assists in 48 appearances tell only part of the story, with his creativity and work rate offering Liverpool encouragement.

Salah Fallout Played Down

Wirtz also addressed Mohamed Salah’s controversial social media post after Liverpool’s difficult campaign.

“Mo has known the club for a long time now. He’s just an honest guy. He says what he thinks. This should be OK. If you want to speak, you should be able to speak.”

Wirtz rejected suggestions that players liking the post meant opposition to Arne Slot.

“No, nothing like that,” Wirtz insists. “I like Mo’s mentality in general — how he sees things, how he works.”

Slot Backing Remains Strong

Despite pressure from outside, Wirtz says Liverpool’s dressing room remains behind Slot.

“The outside world is always trying to create something between the team and the manager. But it’s totally different in this building.”

That unity matters before Brentford, where Liverpool need a point to secure Champions League qualification.

Bigger Role Ahead

Wirtz accepts the Premier League has demanded physical adaptation.

“I did my gym work to gain a bit of muscle, but not too much.”

He now looks towards the World Cup with Germany, then a second Liverpool season shaped by greater knowledge and sharper purpose.

“I’ll attack next season with everything I’ve got.”

For Liverpool, that is the line that matters most. Wirtz has been bruised, tested and criticised, but not diminished. His first year has been education. His second must be impact.
