Alexis Mac Allister Clarifies Liverpool Future After Contract Comments

Alexis Mac Allister has spoken again about his Liverpool future, attempting to provide some context to comments that inevitably generated questions about his long term position at Anfield.

There is a straightforward reason this story matters. Mac Allister is 27, has two years remaining on his Liverpool contract and remains a significant part of Andoni Iraola’s midfield. When a player of that importance discusses his future publicly, particularly after team mates have recently agreed new terms, people listen.

Mac Allister, though, wants it understood that nothing has been decided.

Speaking to SportsCenter ESPN, Mac Allister said: “There isn’t a final decision set in stone. The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract.”

That is probably the most important line here. His deal runs until June 2028, which means Liverpool are not facing an immediate contractual deadline. Equally, conversations around elite players rarely begin when contracts enter their final few months.

Mac Allister also explained why his previous comments carried considerably more emotion.

“In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion. I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that, in the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me.”

His original remarks arrived before Liverpool faced Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, when Mac Allister revealed his disappointment at not being offered fresh terms.

Commitment remains clear at Anfield

Whatever happens beyond 2028, Mac Allister insists his immediate commitment has not changed.

“Like I said, I’m going to give my absolute best. I have two years left, and a lot can happen in two years, there are plenty of possibilities.”

His response on the pitch was useful evidence of that. A day after discussing his contract situation, Mac Allister scored Liverpool’s winner in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

That performance reinforced something Iraola has already made clear, Mac Allister remains an important figure in this Liverpool side.

Liverpool still have time to find a solution

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023 and has since made more than 150 appearances, playing a major role in the Premier League title winning campaign of 2024/25.

His latest comments also suggest that remaining at Anfield beyond his existing contract remains an outcome he would welcome.

“From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too. I want to enjoy this time with my family because I have no doubt that this is one of the best clubs in the world.”

That leaves Liverpool with a situation requiring attention rather than panic.

Mac Allister has two years remaining, there is no agreement over an extension and, based on his comments, there is no final decision over his future either. Iraola previously said there was “still a lot of time to talk about these contract situations”.

For Liverpool, the coming months should reveal whether that time eventually produces meaningful negotiations. For Mac Allister, the message is simpler. He remains happy at Anfield, committed to the team and open to whatever comes next.
