Andoni Iraola Assesses Liverpool Win Over Bournemouth as Alexander Isak Delivers Again

Liverpool went into the international break with another important Premier League victory, beating Bournemouth 1-0 on the south coast in a match that demanded patience, resilience and a sharper level after a difficult opening spell.

Alexander Isak’s finish just before the hour proved decisive at the Vitality Stadium, capping a move created by Cody Gakpo after strong work down the right. For Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, the result represented more than three points. I was disappointed with the first 20, 25 minutes, I think we didn’t start the game with the intensity the game required. To win here is very difficult, I know it very well. Normally Bournemouth start really strong and it took us these 20, 25 minutes until we matched a little bit this level and from there and I think at the end of the first half and second half we played better, we had better situations with the ball and we could win the game.”

That assessment reflected the flow of the afternoon. Bournemouth began with aggression, intensity and pressure, forcing Liverpool to adapt quickly. Iraola knows the ground and the opponent better than most, and there was a sense in his remarks that he had anticipated exactly that kind of start.

Once Liverpool adjusted, the game tilted. Their possession became more meaningful, their shape improved and the contest gradually moved into the areas where they wanted it played. By the closing stages of the first half, and more clearly after the restart, Liverpool looked more composed and more capable of deciding the game.

The winning goal came through quality in wide areas and calm finishing in the box. Gakpo’s contribution stood out, beating two defenders before delivering into a dangerous zone, where Isak applied the finish expected of a striker signed to make the difference in tight games.

Alexander Isak impact remains central

Iraola’s view on Isak was measured and revealing. Rather than focusing only on the goal, he pointed to the broader role required from a centre-forward in this system, especially in matches where space is limited and rhythm is fractured.

He said: “The striker’s job is like this. He had a couple of crosses that he doesn’t hit properly, one chance [he couldn’t] control and this. I think he has to help us to be closer to the box, to play in the opposition half, to have meaningful possession and then, if the team is playing there, he will receive the rewards in terms of goals.”

That is a fair summary of Isak’s afternoon. He was not flawless, but top forwards rarely need many moments to influence a result. His link play, positioning and presence helped Liverpool pin Bournemouth back more effectively after the break, and when the opening arrived he finished with the efficiency that decided the match.

In games of this type, where territory is contested and chances are scarce, Liverpool need a forward capable of turning one clean opening into a winning margin. Isak did exactly that.

Defensive progress offers Liverpool platform

Another significant takeaway for Liverpool was a third successive Premier League clean sheet. While the attacking talent will always attract attention, Iraola was equally encouraged by the growing understanding in his back line.

He said: “I think the more time – especially the defenders – they play together, I think it becomes more solid as a unit in the defensive line. I think Jeremy [Jacquet] and Virgil [van Dijk] with the help now of Ronald [Araujo] and Milos [Kerkez] are getting the connections. I think it’s becoming more solid and in the moments that you need to defend the result or they are putting you under pressure, I think we are looking solid.”

That cohesion mattered. Bournemouth are one of the more awkward sides in the division when pressing high and forcing direct duels. Liverpool had periods where they were stretched, yet they stood up well, especially as the game wore on.

There was also praise for Jacquet, whose development appears to be accelerating. Iraola said: “I’m happy for him because he’s also received his first international call-up. He’s going with France and that is a big national team and I know that he is happy. He’s still very young, he is adapting really well to the Premier League. I think in the first games, physically he was feeling the change of rhythm, he was finishing with cramps, finishing really tired and we had to sub him. Today has been a step forward. He looked solid until the end and I think he’s finished physically also in a good place. I hope he can continue this development.”

For Liverpool, that is an important strand of the season. Van Dijk’s leadership remains vital, but the stability around him will shape how far this side can go across multiple competitions.
