Iraola Returns to Bournemouth as Liverpool Find Their Winning Touch

Andoni Iraola enjoyed a winning return to Bournemouth as Liverpool secured a valuable 1-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium before the international break.

Alexander Isak provided the decisive moment in the 58th minute, scoring his fourth goal of the campaign and moving level with Erling Haaland at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

For Iraola, victory over his former club ended Liverpool’s run of three Premier League matches without a win. His side remain sixth, having finally found a result to accompany their midweek Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham.

Bournemouth make Liverpool work

Bournemouth ensured Iraola endured an uncomfortable first half on familiar ground.

Alisson Becker made an important save from Evanilson, while Liverpool struggled to establish control. Florian Wirtz also found it difficult to exert the influence expected of Liverpool’s record signing.

Jamie Carragher criticised Wirtz on commentary as Bournemouth disrupted Liverpool through the opening 45 minutes.

Iraola acknowledged those difficulties afterwards.

“He started the game slowly, I agree,” Iraola said.

“The first minute they went quite intense and we were not quite with us.”

“The duels in the middle.”

“After that first phase, I think we improved.”

Wirtz helps create Isak winner

Liverpool’s decisive move involved three members of Iraola’s attack.

Cody Gakpo advanced with pace down the right before delivering a cross towards Wirtz. The German redirected the ball intelligently into Isak’s path, allowing the striker to finish and put Liverpool 1-0 ahead.

Iraola felt Wirtz became increasingly influential as the afternoon developed.

“Florian has helped us also to improve.”

“Second half he was playing much better, he was finding better spots to receive and turn.”

“Probably we haven’t found the last part or moment to score but I think I’m much more happy with his second half than his last one.”

Wirtz was replaced by Trey Nyoni in the 72nd minute, while Victor Munoz came on for Bradley Barcola as Iraola looked to manage Liverpool’s advantage.

Iraola leaves Bournemouth with three points

Bournemouth continued searching for an equaliser, introducing Alex Toth and former Liverpool player Ben Gannon Doak during the closing stages.

Liverpool’s defence resisted the pressure and protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The result gives Iraola something tangible to take into the international break. Liverpool required greater control during periods of the contest, particularly during a difficult opening half, while Wirtz eventually contributed to the move that decided the game.

For Iraola, the afternoon ended with a successful return to Bournemouth, three Premier League points and another goal for Isak. Liverpool can now enter the break with victory secured after a demanding afternoon on the south coast.
