Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid: Limited Minutes, Liverpool Talk and a Difficult Return
Trent Alexander-Arnold has barely got going at Real Madrid and, predictably, the noise has started. A player of his profile does not sit on the bench quietly, especially when his move from Liverpool was meant to open a new chapter at the highest level.
So far this season, the numbers are plain enough. Alexander-Arnold has played 345 minutes across seven appearances in all competitions and has one assist. He has started only four of Real Madrid’s 13 matches in La Liga and the Champions League, and he has completed 90 minutes only once, in a 4-0 win over Malaga.
His latest outing summed up where he currently stands. In the 2-1 Clasico win at Barcelona, Federico Valverde started at right-back, then Denzel Dumfries came on after 62 minutes. Alexander-Arnold arrived late from the bench. That tells its own story.
Real Madrid Role Raises Trent Alexander-Arnold Questions
There is still no indication that Alexander-Arnold wants out. Reports suggest he has no immediate intention of pushing for a move and expects to keep fighting for his place in Madrid. His contract runs until 2031, which removes any urgency from Real Madrid’s side too.
The issue is simpler than the speculation. He is short on minutes, short on rhythm and behind others in the pecking order. That happens at elite clubs. Sometimes you play your way through it, sometimes you do not.
Liverpool Return Remains Unclear Despite Anfield Links
Any talk of a Liverpool return needs grounding in reality. Liverpool do not currently view him as a concrete transfer target, which matters more than nostalgia. He left in June 2025 in a £10 million deal, just before his contract was due to expire, and the club has moved on since then.
That has not stopped the debate. Jamie Carragher gave his verdict on The Overlap Fan Debate and did not sugar-coat it. “At the moment, he’s actually third choice right-back for Real Madrid,” he said. “They’re playing a midfield player at right-back, so even in El Clasico, Denzel Dumfries, the first-choice right-back, comes on as a sub. So when you’re third choice at a club, they’re obviously wanting you to move on.
“I’d have him back. I think he made a big mistake (leaving). But if something benefits Liverpool Football Club going forward, when you think of the problems Liverpool have in terms of the right-back…
“Ronnie (Ronald Araujo) has been fantastic but we do have a problem in terms of full-backs passing. We’ve definitely missed his (Alexander-Arnold’s) creativity.”

That is one side of it. Another view came from Gareth Roberts, who said a return would be “a tough one for the fans”. That feels accurate enough.
Transfer Verdict on Alexander-Arnold Future
For now, this looks more like a talking point than a serious transfer story. Alexander-Arnold is staying put, Real Madrid are not forcing a sale, and Liverpool are not actively pushing for a reunion. The headline is simple, his Real Madrid future remains under scrutiny because he is not playing enough. Until that changes, the speculation will keep rolling.
