Liverpool Transfer News: Lewis Steele Discusses £100m Alex Scott Interest

Liverpool’s interest in AFC Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott remains a significant talking point ahead of the January transfer window, although journalist Lewis Steele has questioned whether the Reds will pursue a deal at the reported £100million valuation.

Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Steele discussed the competition from Chelsea, Bournemouth’s approach to potential buyers and Liverpool’s wider midfield recruitment plans.

With Scott attracting attention from both clubs, Steele offered his assessment of where Liverpool stand and why Chelsea could ultimately emerge as the more likely destination.

Lewis Steele Questions Bournemouth’s Liverpool Transfer Claims

Davis opened the discussion by referencing reports from talkSPORT journalists Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook suggesting Chelsea were increasingly confident about signing Scott.

Those reports also indicated Liverpool retained an interest in the midfielder, although their urgency to strengthen in January was considered lower.

Steele acknowledged that Bournemouth’s position had previously raised questions.

“As I said last week or the week before on here it did feel a little bit like as you say bournemouth were trying to smoke out chelsea maybe that’s worked.”

He explained that he had previously considered Chelsea the leading candidates.

“I always said, you know, Chelsea would probably be the front runners. And I don’t think that’s changed.”

The journalist then offered further insight into how Bournemouth’s apparent promotion of Liverpool’s interest might have influenced the situation.

“As I had it, you know, Bournemouth were… putting out that Liverpool were the frontrunners, which to me felt like, come on then, Chelsea, what have you got for us?”

His comments raised the possibility that Bournemouth’s reported stance could encourage Chelsea to strengthen their interest.

Liverpool Face Major Question Over £100m Valuation

One of the biggest considerations surrounding Scott concerns the financial commitment required to secure his signature.

Davis referenced Bournemouth’s reported valuation exceeding £100million, with Steele questioning whether Liverpool would commit such a substantial sum during January.

“It doesn’t feel very liverpool like to make a hundred million signing especially in january.”

Steele also highlighted the midfielder’s contract situation, with approximately 18 months remaining on his existing agreement.

Those considerations contributed to his assessment that Chelsea might be better positioned to complete a transfer.

“When you consider all those things it does seem like it’s more leaning towards chelsea but we’ll have to wait and see.”

However, Steele made clear that Liverpool’s admiration for Scott remains genuine.

“Liverpool definitely like him it’s just a case of how much they like him and whether they’re whether they’re willing to put that money on the table.”

That distinction is important when assessing Liverpool’s position. Interest in Scott has been acknowledged, although Steele offered no indication that the club had decided to meet Bournemouth’s valuation.

Chelsea Competition Complicates Liverpool’s Plans

The prospect of Chelsea pursuing Scott featured prominently throughout the discussion.

Davis referenced the latest reports suggesting the London club were becoming increasingly confident, while Steele admitted he had not received any fresh information confirming those developments.

“I’ve not heard any updates to be honest.”

He also acknowledged that the January window remained some distance away.

“But it’s still early days. It’s still two months to go until that transfer window even opens.”

The uncertainty surrounding Scott’s future leaves both clubs with decisions to make.

For Liverpool, the central question concerns whether their interest will translate into a formal pursuit during January.

Chelsea’s reported confidence and Bournemouth’s valuation add further considerations to an already complicated situation.

Liverpool Midfield Recruitment Could Wait Until Summer

The discussion also considered Liverpool’s broader midfield plans, particularly their interest in AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara.

Steele acknowledged that Liverpool had previously explored the possibility of signing Camara, although no agreement materialised.

He also suggested that the improved performances of Liverpool’s existing midfielders could influence future recruitment decisions.

“When everyone was saying how desperate the midfield situation was in the summer, that was not really factoring in how good Mac Allister was going to be or how good Trey Nyoni was going to be.”

The form of Alexis Mac Allister and Trey Nyoni therefore provides another consideration for Julian Ward as Liverpool assess their options.

Steele’s assessment leaves Scott firmly among the players Liverpool admire, although uncertainty remains over the club’s willingness to pursue such an expensive transfer.

For now, Chelsea appear better positioned in Steele’s estimation, while Liverpool continue evaluating their midfield requirements.

The decisive issue remains whether Liverpool’s interest in Alex Scott is strong enough to justify Bournemouth’s asking price, particularly with alternative targets under consideration and the possibility of waiting until next summer.
