Liverpool 4-2 Hoffenheim: Player Ratings

Liverpool qualified for the Champions League with a huge 4-2 victory (6-3 agg) over Hoffenheim in the second leg of their playoff contest at Anfield.

It was a dominating performance from the Reds in front of a packed out Anfield for their first European match at home since their 3-0 victory over Villarreal in the semi-final of the Europa League in May 2016.

Goals from Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Emre Can were enough to see them cross the line and they will now take their place alongside league rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham in this year’s Champions League main draw.

Here is how we rated each of Liverpool’s players based on their performances in the victory…

Mignolet 7 – fairly solid, quick off his line. Not too much he could do about the goals. A few dodgy throws!

TAA 8 – got caught out of position a few times and he was at fault to some extent for the first goal but forward he was terrific. He was excellent in the second half before going off. Bright talent!

Matip 7 – Was commanding when on the ball and played some nice passes. Could have helped the full-backs out more but fairly solid.

Lovren 7 – Same as Matip. Could be more aggressive in 50-50 situations too.

Moreno 7.5 – looked good going forward and created a few chances but he was caught out of position on too many occasions, like Trent. A good performance from the left-back though.

Henderson 8 – Defensively very good. He was excellent in the second half despite not creating too much going forward in the first. Set up Firmino brilliantly in the second half.

Can 8 – looked dangerous on the ball and the brightest out of the three midfielders going forward. That turn in the second half… wow.

Wijnaldum 6 – looked really poor at times in the first half but also produced a few flash moments of brilliance, including a delicious through ball which led to the third goal. Missed a sitter in the 54th minute.

Salah 7 – His all round play wasn’t brilliant but he found himself in the right place at the right time – especially for his goal. Lost out on too many 50-50 tackles

Firmino 7 – did some great work off the ball and every time he got it, he maintained possession. Didn’t get too involved until the second half but got his goal.

Mane 7.5 – looked the most dangerous going forward but for his standards. He wasn’t as amazing…

Subs:

Gomez (for TAA 65 mins) – 6

Milner (for Can 69 mins) – 6

Klavan (for Mane 90 mins) – N/A

  1. Lovren deserve a 2 not a 7. How can he gets a 7 same as Salah or Firmino. His responsibilty for the 2 goals conceded. Mario did all the defensive work. Unbelievable you blame TAA for the first goal when nothing mentioned to Lovren about the first goal
