Player Ratings as a Patient Liverpool secure three points

It was a tough opening half to the game as Newcastle defended in an organized manner, but once Salah put Liverpool ahead, there was always going to be only one winner.

This is how the Reds fared.

Loris Karius (8) – Was a spectator for most of the match, but when called upon, made a world-class save to deny Diame from equalizing at the end of the first half. Was always intent on releasing the ball at the earliest. Solid performance yet again.

Trent Alexander Arnold (6) – Not his best game as his touch and passing was a mixed bag. Had a really good game attacking wise though, as we have come to expect.

Dejan Lovren (7) – Re-instated to the lineup at the expense of Matip. Not involved in any major moment as he stuck to his game plan. Solid clean sheet.

Virgil Van Dijk (7.5) – Looks ever so comfortable on the ball as he gets accustomed to life at Liverpool. As Liverpool struggled to open up Newcastle, his long passes from the back and him stepping up to the midfield gave Liverpool an extra hand.

Andrew Robertson (6.5) – Was outpaced by Yedlin in the first half, in what would prove to be the only minor blemish in today’s performance. Hard working as ever and linked up well with Mane and the midfield.

Jordan Henderson (7) – Solid game from the returning skipper. Liverpool were caught in a rut of sideways and backwards movement when Henderson and Chamberlain started upping the tempo which ultimately resulted in the opening of the floodgates.

Emre Can (7) – Disciplined performance considering that Can was walking a tightrope having already accumulated 9 yellow cards. Was quick to close down the Newcastle players and was the extra cog in the attacking third more often than once.

Oxlade Chamberlain (7.5) – Another good performance, following up on his excellent second-half performance against West Ham. Looked the most threatening of the midfielders and his drive and feint to shoot opened up space for the pass to Salah. Taken off midway through the second half.

Mo Salah (8) – Another game, another goal off his left foot, another record broken. Could have easily had a couple more but Dummett had a solid defensive performance today. Unlucky not to get a foul in the dying moments of the game.

Roberto Firmino (7.5) – What Liverpool sorely lacked in the first half was the dropping deep and linking up the play of Firmino as Liverpool struggled to unshackle Newcastle. Firmino returned to form and his incredible link-up play with Mane led to the second goal.

Sadio Mane (7.5) – Struggled with his control early in the first half and generally was conspicuous by his absence during that patient first half. Shot to life during the second goal as his movement created a goal where there was none. An extra 0.5 for faithfully copying Firmino’s celebration.

Substitutes

Adam Lallana (N/A) – Came on to replace Mane. Most likely will start vs Porto.

James Milner (N/A) – Came on late to replace Oxlade Chamberlain. Defended well on a potential goal scoring chance for Newcastle.

Joel Matip (N/A) – Came on for Firmino to make up the numbers defensively.
