Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker believes that the famous Anfield support is sure to play its part on another big European night on Merseyside next week.
The Reds’ summer signing knows first-hand what it’s like to experience the cauldron that is Liverpool’s home on a Champions League night. Alisson’s Roma team were beaten 5-2 in the first leg of last season’s semi-finals as Liverpool marched their way to Kiev.
Alisson, the proud holder of the Premier League’s best defensive record, told Liverpool’s official site that, as a Roma player, he found the atmosphere “difficult” and “incredible”.
“It’s difficult to play against Liverpool. The quality of the team is amazing. And then the 12th player, outside the pitch, that is the supporters.
“Last year, I can remember about the semi-finals that they played against us, it was difficult. It was an unbelievable atmosphere. It was incredible.
“I like to play with supporters of the other team shouting, talking to me, [it gives me incentive]. But here was something different.”
The Brazilian international goalkeeper also admitted that Liverpool’s fervent support also played its part in helping him decide on whether to join The Reds last summer.
“When I signed, when I wanted to come here and I knew about the interest of Liverpool, yes, for sure [that experience was a factor].
“We players, we want a team that wants you, a team with quality with a good manager and with great supporters. I think here at Liverpool you have maybe the biggest supporters in the world.”
“The supporters are a great part of this team. They cannot go to the pitch and play but… they can do something to move us, to charge us to do something more on the pitch.”
Alisson and his teammates return to Liverpool from Marbella on Friday as the final preparations begin before they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
