Reds await Van Dijk fate after defender picked up injury in win over Spurs

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk picked up a knock during his man of the match performance in The Reds’ 2-1 win over Spurs at Anfield on Sunday.

The Dutch international defender seemed to collide with Moussa Sissoko after brilliantly defending a counter attack where he was alone, defending against Sissoko and Heung-Min Son.

Jurgen Klopp was asked about Van Dijk’s injury in the post-match press conference.

“We have to see. I asked him and I think it was in the counter-attack situation when Sissoko hit him… I don’t know if he twisted it or it is a knock.

“He was walking to the interviews with a big ice pack. I hope it’s nothing serious but I don’t know yet.”

Liverpool’s number 4 has started all 32 of The Reds’ Premier League games this season and has arguably proved to be Jurgen Klopp’s most important signing in his time at Anfield.

Van Dijk helped to improve Liverpool’s defence from one of the worst in the top half of the table to the best in the Premier League.

He formed a solid partnership with Joe Gomez up until Gomez suffered a broken ankle at Burnley in early December. Since then, Van Dijk has mainly been playing alongside Joel Matip at the back. Whether it’s Matip, Gomez or Dejan Lovren, Van Dijk seems to bring the best out of his defensive partners.

Liverpool would not be in the Premier League title race without Virgil van Dijk so keeping him fit between now and May is vital if Klopp’s side is to have any chance of glory.

Klopp’s Redmen continue their push for the league title on Friday night when they travel to play Ralph Hasenhuttl’s in-form Southampton side at St Mary’s.

Let’s hope Van Dijk is recovered in time for that one.
