Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gave fans a generally positive update regarding his squad’s fitness ahead of tonight’s Champions League fixture at FC Porto.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Klopp was asked about the fitness of club captain and in-form midfielder, Jordan Henderson.
“Hendo is all fine,” said Klopp. “We all have knocks and Hendo got a knock, but that would never take him out.”
The Reds’ young defender, Joe Gomez, played an hour for Liverpool U23s on Sunday and came through it without any issues. The former Charlton defender has travelled to Portugal with the squad, as did Adam Lallana who is also returning from injury.
When asked if Gomez was looking to be getting back to full fitness, Klopp said:
“Absolutely [he looks strong].
“He played right full-back, we need him as this option as well. We all know he played a wonderful season at the centre-half position until his injury, but he can play both and it’s good to have him.”
Regarding Lallana, Klopp didn’t reveal if the midfielder would make the matchday squad.
“Adam is back in the travelling squad, we have to say. Because we have two players more, we will see what happens. Usually, if nothing happens, it would be a little bit too early.”
The only two players of note who stayed back on Merseyside were Dejan Lovren and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Lovren reportedly has an illness and Oxlade-Chamberlain is still undergoing a strict rehabilitation programme before he is risked in first-team action following his serious knee injury in last season’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma at Anfield.
