PEC Zwolle’s teenage defender Sepp van den Berg is expected to sign for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool from the Dutch club later this week.
The 17-year-old centre-back is due to undergo his medical for The Reds on Wednesday ahead of a proposed £1.79 million move.
Van den Berg has made 22 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie for PEC Zwolle, making his league debut for the club just three months after his 16th birthday.
According to Matt Law in The Telegraph, Liverpool had to fight off interest from both FC Bayern and Ajax to sign the Dutch U19 international defender.
Serie A’s Sampdoria attempted to lure Van den Berg to Italy with a £2.25 million bid in January but this was turned down. Now, with the player in the last year of his existing deal at PEC Zwolle, The Reds have managed to attain his signature for even less.
Catching the eye of Michael Edwards and his scouting and data analysis teams has to be a huge confidence booster for any young player. Now he has the chance to learn and develop under Jurgen Klopp’s tutelage in the coming years.
Van den Berg is expected to spend next season just acclimatising to life at Melwood and getting himself accustomed to Klopp’s style of play. It will most likely be the 2020/21 season before we hear of the youngster attempting to make an impression on the first team squad.
