Divock Origi says he always wanted to stay with Liverpool

Liverpool forward Divock Origi has revealed that he always intended on staying at Anfield and that he has “always felt comfortable” at the club.

The Reds’ Champions League hero has put pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at Liverpool far beyond 2020 when his previous deal was set to run out. There is no release clause included in Origi’s new contract.

The Belgian international striker spoke with Liverpoolfc.com shortly after penning his contract extension.

When asked if it was a difficult decision to stay at Liverpool, Origi said:

“I always felt comfortable here. I made steps during my career, I say that I became a man here at this club, I signed when I was 19. When we had to make the decision I just wanted to speak with the club first and my entourage, but the feeling was always that I wanted to stay and extend my contract.”

Origi was very positive in his talk about the club and its current setup.

“It’s an amazing club, we have a good group, the staff are amazing. Even coming into Melwood, the people that work here and everything, you feel there is something special going on here. We’re still young so there’s a lot of potential in the group. I’m just having fun in training and on the pitch. Those are all important factors as a player.”

With Liverpool’s front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané all involved in international tournaments this summer, Origi looks set to be given plenty of opportunities to show his worth in the early stages of the season.

“Some people had a tournament and they need some vacation, but, for me personally, whenever I have fun on the pitch everything else comes. So I just try to focus on that, to be as fit as possible, having fun and expressing myself and helping the team. The rest will unfold by itself.”

Origi developed a liking for popping up with big goals when Liverpool needed him most last season. Let’s hope to see more of the same in 2019/20.
