Liverpool’s Joe Gomez says the team is hungry for Super Cup success this Wednesday in Istanbul as Reds prepare to face Chelsea.
Jurgen Klopp’s men lost out on the Community Shield to Manchester City after a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat following an entertaining 1-1 draw at Wembley earlier this month.
Now, Liverpool have another chance of early-season silverware when they meet Frank Lampard’s new-look Chelsea side at Vodafone Park in Turkey.
Gomez, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, feels the Community Shield loss will spur Liverpool on for Super Cup success.
“I think [the Community Shield] would have been nice but we lost the way we did, which was unfortunate.
“I think now that just made us even hungrier to get our hands on a piece of silverware again. I think that’s going to be our aim this year, just to get as much silverware as possible.
“Hopefully we can do it, but it’s obviously against a tough side and we know it won’t be easy. We’re looking forward to it.
“Playing in finals and for silverware is what you aim for throughout the whole season.”
Chelsea fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday in their first Premier League game of the season.
Lampard will be putting them through their paces ahead of Wednesday’s match and Liverpool need to be wary of The Blues bouncing back from their Old Trafford defeat like a wounded animal.
Gomez started alongside Virgil van Dijk in the Community Shield and Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Norwich on Friday night. However, The Reds’ defence has looked shaky so far and it will be interesting to see if Klopp opts to start Joel Matip against Chelsea.
