Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk hopes that The Reds can continue the habit of winning silverware after they added another European trophy to the Champions League title they won in June.

Jurgen Klopp’s side overcame Chelsea in a penalty shootout victory in the heat in Turkey after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Frank Lampard’s side.

Sadio Mané scored both Liverpool’s goals while Olivier Giroud and a Jorginho penalty provided the two goals for The Blues.

After the game, Virgil van Dijk spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about his hopes for this group of players over the next couple of years.

“Hopefully it will be a nice habit [of winning trophies].

“It was tough, they played well [and] we had moments of playing well as well. I think it was a great game to watch as a neutral spectator, but overall we’re all very happy that we won the penalty shootout and take the cup with us.”

Liverpool’s defence again looked shaky and far too easy for Chelsea to break down, as Van Dijk goes on to mention.

“I think at times we lost the ball a little bit too easy and the gaps were too big and they did well, they countered on us in a couple of moments and became dangerous. [We had] a couple of moments that were a bit lucky with the offside trap and stuff, but after the break, we did very well.

“We came out and we showed what we all want to see and then after that they had moments, we had moments as well and it could go any way. After all, it’s all about a bit of luck in the penalty shootout.”

When asked about the words of wisdom Klopp imparted on his team at half time:

“Keep the ball, play your game, push up – make the spaces as small as possible for them to play and put them under pressure, and that’s what we did.”

Liverpool’s next game is a tough away trip to Southampton on Saturday afternoon. Any kind of win at St Mary’s will take a monumental effort from The Reds after those 120 gruelling minutes in Istanbul.
