This is where Liverpool start winning, isn’t it? Champions League group games at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp have resulted in five victories for The Reds from six matches so far. Sevilla were the only team not to be defeated on Merseyside, coming away with a 2-2 draw in the 2017/18 season.

There should be goals and plenty of entertaining, attacking football on display. More importantly, Liverpool needs to win, though.

Form

Liverpool Form

Liverpool remains top of the Premier League table, five points clear of Manchester City, after seven wins on the trot to start the season.

The Reds lost 2-0 at Napoli a fortnight ago in their opening group game of the Champions League but it’s at home where Jurgen Klopp’s side has done the damage over recent seasons.

The last night a European fixture was played at Anfield was when Liverpool dismantled Barcelona 4-0 in last season’s semi-final, on the way to winning European Cup number six.

RB Salzburg Form

Red Bull Salzburg, under US manager Jesse Marsch, are top of the Austrian Bundesliga with 25 points from their opening 9 league games.

Impressively, after just 9 games, there are already seven players with three goals or more for the team. They have scored 40 and conceded 9.

You will all have heard about top scorer Erling Braut Haaland who banged in a hat-trick in their excellent 6-2 home win against Genk in the Champions League.

Haaland, the son of former Manchester City player Alf-Inge Haaland, has amassed a brilliant 11 goals in just 8 Austrian Bundesliga appearances so far. The Norwegian striker is still only 19!

Team News

Liverpool Team News

Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri are the only Champions League squad members who are currently recovering from injuries.

Joe Gomez and James Milner could start in place of Joel Matip and Gini Wijnaldum.

Divock Origi may be rewarded for his lively cameo at Sheffield United with a place in attack to rest Sadio Mané who had been suffering from a knock last week.

Other than that, Liverpool will be much the same as they have been for most of the season. Fabinho will marshall the midfield while Adrian continues in goals for the time being.

RB Salzburg Team News

Jesse Marsch tends to alternate between 4-2-2-2 and 3-1-4-2 as his preferred formation for RB Salzburg. I would expect him to go with four at the back at Anfield, however, due to Liverpool’s wide attacking threat.

Fortunately for Marsch, RB Salzburg have no injury worries at the moment so he will have a full-strength squad to choose from at Anfield.

Predicted Lineups

Liverpool XI (4-3-3) – Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Origi

RB Salzburg XI (4-2-2-2) – Stankovic; Kristensen, Ramalho, Wober, Ulmer; Bernede, Junuzovic; Minamino, Szoboszlai; Chan Hwang, Braut Haaland

When they last met

This will be the first meeting between Liverpool and RB Salzburg.

Prediction

Liverpool 3 – 1 RB Salzburg

I think RB Salzburg will score on Wednesday and it should be a frantic game but Liverpool, at the end of the day, are a level above and need to make that difference count.

Expect a home win in a game where both teams get on the scoresheet.
