Trent Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool are stronger for their setbacks
Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold believes setbacks in recent years have made the squad stronger as a unit.
The Reds suffered a Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid in Kyiv in 2017, before bouncing back to win the club’s sixth European Cup trophy in Madrid in June.
As well as winning last season’s Champions League, Liverpool achieved their highest ever league points total but finished one adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men have started this season with 8 consecutive victories and hold an 8-point lead at the top of the table.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, Alexander-Arnold highlighted the collective growth the squad has gone through as a result of previous disappointments.
“The players that we have in our side have all had failures before, we’ve all had setbacks and knockbacks.
“We’ve really bounced back from there and got to where we are now and where we are as a team. The biggest example of that is probably the fact that we lost the Champions League final the season before and were able to use that as motivation to get back there and win it the next season.
“It’s something a lot of teams aren’t capable of, but we’ve showed that we are and we’re able to get better from disappointment.”
Liverpool’s number 66 was asked about the upcoming trip to Manchester United, this weekend.
“Traditionally and historically, the Man United-Liverpool game is always massive. It’s one of the biggest games of the season and they’re a top side as well.
“It’s always going to be a big game and a big occasion because both teams want to win it so much.”
The Reds travel to Old Trafford for the huge Premier League clash which kicks off at 16:30 UK time on Sunday. Alexander-Arnold and co will be eager to give Klopp his first win at the ground as Liverpool manager.
