Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Norwegian international midfielder Sander Berge from their Champions League group opponents, KRC Genk.

As reported on Goal.com, the rumours stemmed from the club’s loose-lipped sporting director Dimitri De Conde.

De Conde was speaking with Radio Punto Nuovo when he disclosed that Liverpool and Napoli have apparently made enquiries about Berge’s future.

Berge stands at 6 foot 4 inches tall and is still only 21-years-old. The young midfielder can play as a defensive midfielder or more of a box-to-box central midfielder. He has started 14 of Genk’s 15 league games in Belgium so far this season while playing every minute of the side’s Champions League campaign.

Speaking about Berge, De Conde said:

“Napoli are interested in Sander, it’s a possibility a deal could be done.

“We also know that Liverpool are interested and [Jurgen] Klopp, after the game at Anfield [in the Champions League], complimented him on his performance.”

De Conde could very well be trying to garner some interest in Berge before next summer in order to maximise any potential transfer fee. With this in mind, it’s hard to place too much faith in what Genk’s sporting director was saying.

“These are situations we can’t predict, we’re focused on our season, hoping to keep Sander until May. Then if a top club like Napoli is serious, we will sit at the same table to negotiate, it is logical.

“The current valuation of Berge? We do not talk about figures; we do not set a price at the moment. We will see when we find ourselves in a negotiation.”

While a move for Berge is indeed possible. It’s worth remembering that Liverpool already have another young midfielder in Marko Grujic who will be returning to Jurgen Klopp’s squad next summer.

Grujic has been impressive again this season in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin and could play a role in The Reds’ first-team squad in 2020/21.
