Liverpool have apparently asked Timo Werner’s representatives for more time before committing to a decision on making a bid for the RB Leipzig star.
Apparently, Liverpool’s transfer team wants to hold off and see what the fallout looks like once the global Coronavirus pandemic is under control. There could be huge changes with regards to the next transfer window and Liverpool do not want to act too soon.
According to reports in The Guardian, Werner is anxious to leave RB Leipzig this summer after spending the last four years at the club, developing into one of the most sought-after names in European football during that time.
The Guardian’s report goes on to highlight that Liverpool are favourites to sign the Germany international striker having declared their interest in Werner months ago. Werner is also after a move abroad, telling FC Bayern that he favours this over a move to another Bundesliga club at the moment.
Werner’s release clause stands at €60 million and, as stated in The Guardian:
Liverpool are keen to get more of an understanding in the next few weeks of what will happen to this summer’s transfer window before completing any deal.
The coronavirus pandemic is likely to distort the market this summer, even for the top clubs, and Liverpool are not ready to commit to spending €60m on one player.
That’s not to say Liverpool won’t spend €60 million on Werner. It sounds like Jürgen Klopp, Michael Edwards and co want to bide their time and see how valuations of other players are affected before making such a big signing.
