With some reports still insisting on Liverpool’s interest in Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, it has now been claimed that Paris Saint Germain will also battle The Reds for his signature.
That means, if these reports are to be believed, that Koulibaly has PSG, Liverpool and Manchester United after his signature. Those are the three clubs who have been linked with the defender. There are sure to be more watching and waiting for the right time to make an approach for the Senegal international.
Today’s L’Equipe story claims that PSG view Koulibaly as the ideal long-term replacement for Brazil international Thiago Silva. It also states that PSG have the advantage of doing previous dealings with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis – the signings of Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi, specifically.
Napoli have apparently put an £89 million price-tag on Koulibaly so it will be interesting to see what fee is paid for him if he does move clubs in the next transfer window.
While Koulibaly is not the normal age profile of a Liverpool signing during Jürgen Klopp’s time at the club, it does not mean we can completely rule the possibility of such a transfer out. Michael Edwards and his scouting department may have been asked to single out one player who is at his full potential, a ‘finished article’ to add to the defence.
Liverpool already have Joe Gomez and Joël Matip battling to be the first-choice centre-back partner of Virgil van Dijk. Dejan Lovren is next in the pecking order. Gomez will not be leaving the club any time in the near future. However, if Matip or Lovren is sold, then Klopp’s squad may need another experienced centre-half in the squad.
