Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp gave an injury update regarding both Jordan Henderson and Joël Matip following The Reds’ penalty-shootout defeat to Arsenal in Saturday’s Community Shield.
Klopp’s men drew 1-1 with Arsenal after 90 minutes at Wembley. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave The Gunners a first-half lead with a fantastic finish from the edge of the box. Liverpool substitute Takumi Minamino scored his first goal for The Reds to equalise in the 73rd minute of the game.
Arsenal then went on to score all five of their penalties in the shootout. Young Rhian Brewster’s spot-kick for Liverpool hit the crossbar and went over, giving Mikel Arteta’s side the 5-4 win in the shootout.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game, Klopp was asked for an update on the rehabilitation of both Henderson and Matip.
“For that, we have to see when he [Henderson] trains.
“I think Joël and Hendo will be in parts of team training next week and we will see. Of course, the longer they have the better the chance is, but I don’t know in this moment.”
Liverpool’s next official game is Saturday, September 12 when they welcome newly-promoted Leeds United to Anfield for the kick-off of the Premier League season.
It’s likely, however, that Klopp and co will arrange some behind-closed-doors friendlies for those squad players who will not be away on international duty over the next fortnight.
