Liverpool travel to London this weekend as they prepare to face Chelsea in the Premier League. We’ve had a look at what starting lineup Jürgen Klopp might go with.
The Reds began their season with a 4-3 home win over newly-promoted Leeds United last Saturday evening. It was an end-to-end clash at Anfield with Mohamed Salah (x3) and Virgil van Dijk scoring Liverpool’s goals. As the score would suggest, however, Liverpool’s defence didn’t perform to a great standard on the day with individual errors even creeping into Van Dijk’s game. Let’s put it down to early-season ‘rustiness’.
Alisson was not at fault for any of Leeds’ goals last weekend and the Brazil international remains possibly the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment, as he has been for the last two years now. He will start between the sticks for Liverpool.
I think Klopp will stick with the same back four from the Leeds game meaning Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson will be on the flanks, with Joe Gomez continuing in the middle alongside Van Dijk.
In midfield, the incoming Thiago may not be officially registered in time for Sunday’s match. Klopp could opt for his preferred midfield trio from last season consisting of Fabinho at the base with Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum just ahead of him.
The forward line will be Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané. Hopefully, Salah can continue his red-hot form at Stamford Bridge. Our Egyptian King was on another planet when it came to performance levels last Saturday. We may just need that again if Liverpool are to take all three points on Sunday against Frank Lampard’s side.
Predicted Liverpool lineup (4-3-3) vs Chelsea: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mané
