Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is the latest Red to suffer an injury this season with the young centre-back reportedly having sustained a “serious” setback at England training camp.
Jürgen Klopp and his backroom team will await the results of further tests over the coming days to determine the extent of Gomez’s injury.
The story broke on Wednesday afternoon with the only detail shared by The Athletic being that Gomez had suffered a “knee injury”.
It seems certain that Gomez is out until the new year, at least. Liverpool are already without Virgil van Dijk while Fabinho is currently injured. It’s hoped that Fabinho will be available for The Reds after his international break. Joël Matip just returned to first-team action in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City. It now looks like Fabinho and Matip will be Klopp’s only option as a pairing in central defence. Left-back Andy Robertson may also be able to move to the middle of the back four if needed.
Rhys Williams has played some minutes for Liverpool this season out of necessity and the youngster has looked very promising. However, Williams only turns 20 next February so it is a lot of responsibility to put on a developing defender’s shoulders.
23-year-old Nathaniel Phillips has also lined out for Liverpool in the Premier League but was so far down the pecking order, he was not even registered to play any part in The Reds’ Champions League group stage.
For now, it is likely to be a new partnership of Matip and Fabinho for the coming weeks/months. We’ll wait to hear further information on just how serious Gomez’s injury is.
