International midfielder could be on his way out of Liverpool this summer

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujić could be leaving the club on a permanent transfer this summer after loan spells in recent years.

Grujić, 25, has been a full Serbia international since his debut for his country in 2016. He spent the last few years on loan at Red Star Belgrade, Cardiff City, Hertha BSC, and, most recently, FC Porto.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Grujić could be on his way out on a permanent transfer this summer. In the article, they state:

Marko Grujic is set to spark a bidding war with Liverpool ready to cash in on the midfielder this summer.

Grujic has seen his profile rocket over the past 12 months having impressed during a loan spell in helping Porto reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The 25-year-old’s role in the round of 16 win over Juventus prompted a number of clubs from Serie A and the Bundesliga – where the midfielder shone for two years on a temporary stay at Hertha Berlin – to register an interest.

The ECHO understands those clubs have remained in contact with Liverpool over a possible permanent deal for the player.

And Porto, who were encouraged by Grujic’s performance during the second half of the season, have now been pressed into action over preparing a move.

The Echo piece goes on to claim that Porto are willing to sell to fund a move for Grujić in the coming weeks:

They were initially considering another loan offer but with Liverpool preferring a permanent departure, they are now looking to sell Portuguese midfielder Sergio Oliveria to Fiorentina for €20million to raise funds for Grujic’s signature.

Liverpool will look for around £20m for the player, who was Jurgen Klopp’s first signing as Reds boss for £5.1million from Red Star Belgrade in January 2016.

Grujić is a clearly talented footballer who, for some reason, never seemed to fit into Klopp’s plans at Anfield, despite being one of the manager’s first signings for the club. Now 25, it really is time for the midfielder to be playing regular first-team football in one of Europe’s top leagues.

With Gini Wijnaldum leaving Liverpool this summer, it may have been an opportunity for Grujić to make a stake for a first-team place with The Reds next season. However, according to these reports, Grujić will be plying his trade elsewhere once the transfer window closes.
