Liverpool 0 – 1 Inter Milan – Match Report

The first half was a game of frustration for both sides, with neither giving much away through the opening period. Both Joel Matip and Virgil Van Dijk could have scored from tremendous Trent deliveries, and Alisson was alert enough to parry away a good cross come shot from Hakan Çalhanoğlu. These great teams appeared intent on cancelling each other out, which of course suited the reds far more.

The second half started with a clear intent to involve Ivan Perišić more, as Inter’s wide play became more prominent. A Salah opportunity hit the post as the game became frantic, before Lautaro Martínez scored a wonderful long range effort. Moments after the goal, Alexis Sánchez received a second yellow, as his reckless nature immediately halted Inter’s ascent.

The introduction of Henderson and Keita seemed sensible, with Thiago needing managing, and Jones a somewhat peripheral figure. The game saw more Liverpool opportunities arise, and the game was more a contest than it should have been, as the home side struggled to break down a defiant Italian team.

The game was lost, but the tie was won by the reds, as they entered the next round of the Champions League.
