Nottingham Forest 0 – 1 Liverpool – The Player Ratings

Alisson Becker – 7.5

A busier game than he could have envisioned, with a few moments of frantic play engulfing his penalty box. A clean sheet, some smart saves, and a semi-final awaits the giant Brazilian.

Joe Gomez – 8.0

A very good game for the England defender. Was understandably lacking in the normal Trent style attacking sense, but any hesitation in possession was made up for with energy and intent. His covering pace got him out of danger when required, and his support of the central defenders at times key. A good outing, and one that may just be needed if he has to come in more often.

Kostas Tsimikas – 6.5

Was uncharacteristically wasteful with the ball through the first half, with a couple of speculative efforts and wayward corners. His energy was a plus point, and his willingness to work a highlight. The ball for Jota’s winner was a bright moment, within an average display.

Virgil Van Dijk – 7.5

Forest tried their best to disrupt the Dutchman, but he let his cool in a good overall performance. Was able to stem moments that broke, and despite being caught out of possession once in the second half, his pace allowed almost instant recovery. Not a vintage display, but one which was needed to secure another Wembley trip.

Ibrahima Konate – 7.5

Was dragged about by an eager Forest attack on occasion, and at times was the strength in the reds defense. Another win for the young defender, and a nice variation in games he will have to encounter.

Fabinho – 7.0

Another steely performance, and his hardened presence allowed Liverpool control of the middle. A logical start and even more logical withdrawal.

Subbed – 64 mins

Naby Keita – 7.0

A difficult game overall, where his off ball was better than much of his on ball efforts. A solid performance in a tricky game, as such good cup ties should be.

Subbed – 64 mins

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 5.5

One of the final few starts, and I think he knows the opportunities may now have left him. Couldn’t muster consistency and intent was matched by any intelligent play.

Subbed – 64 mins

Harvey Elliott – 6.0

A different role, and one that simply doesn’t suit him. Played like a midfielder in possession, except with nothing ahead of him. The attacking line limits his playmaking ability, and shows the need for a proper back up to Mo.

Subbed – 64 mins

Roberto Firmino – 7.0

Deserved to start, and his work rate showed. Was neat, tidy, and generally in good form. A little rusty, and the mass rotation left Liverpools attack a little underwhelming.

Diogo Jota – 6.5

Scored the winner, and his striking instincts masked a poor overall outing. Will need to improve his game if Premier and Champions Leagues starts are wanted. Well taken goal nonetheless.

Subs:

Luis Diaz – 6.5 (on 64)

Busy if unproductive, and couldn’t break the lines as usual with Forest battling away.

Taki Minamino – 6.0 (on 64)

Wasn’t sure where to play, but nice to see him come in.

Jordan Henderson – 6.5 (on 64)

Showed a desire to work, and drive the team on.

Thiago Alcantara – 7.5 (on 64)

Was able to run the game almost immediately, such a precious talent.

The Manager:

Jurgen Klopp – 8.5

The rotation bus rolls on, and he has to be applauded for managing so many changes and still come out victorious. In a game where Forest gave there all, he was decisive in his subs, and knew when to pull that trigger. The end of season schedule will benefit from his willingness to blood so much of the squad, and rest as required. We can only hope that City struggle with their ‘limited’ changes available to them.
