Liverpool still among Champions League favourites despite nightmare draw
Liverpool are among the bookmakers favourites to win the Champions League this season despite drawing Real Madrid in the round of 16. Supporters can use bonus codes 2023 to make the most of their money and lock-in the high odds now, as they are sure to tumble if the Reds knock out the defending champions early next year.
Jurgen Klopp’s men endured a disappointing start to the 2022/23 season with injuries and inconsistent form hampering their progress. Liverpool won just six of their opening 14 Premier League games – losing four and drawing the remaining four. Considering they lost just two games throughout the entire 2021/22 campaign, it’s safe to say it’s been a shocking start for the Merseysiders.
Back-to-back wins over Tottenham and Southampton moved Liverpool up to sixth in the table on 22 points before domestic football broke up for the Qatar World Cup. The Reds are a whopping 15 points behind leaders Arsenal so they title looks unrealistic, but they also face a battle just to finish in the top four as they’re seven points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham.
Liverpool can cut that gap to four points if they win their game in hand, but it’s clear they are in unchartered territory right now. To go from a team who’s been competing for the title in recent years, so sitting sixth and battling for fourth, will be a shock to the system for Klopp’s men.
However, while they have struggled in the Premier League this season, Liverpool made light work of their Champions’ League group. They finished level on points with Napoli having won 5 of their 6 games and breezed into the knockout stages of the competition – finishing 9 points ahead of third-placed Ajax.
Among the favourites
Liverpool have a huge history in the European Cup and they’ll hope to go deep in the competition again this season, but they’re going to have to do it the hard way. Finishing second in Group A has come at a cost as they have been drawn to face Spanish giants Real Madrid in the last-16. The match is a repeat of last year’s final that saw Madrid claim victory thanks to a 1-0 win in Paris back in May.
Klopp’s men will now be out for revenge, and the bookmakers feel they have a good chance of getting it. Liverpool are priced as the 9/1 joint third favourites with PSG to win the Champions League this season. Only Manchester City [13/8] and Bayern Munich [6/1] are above Liverpool in the betting odds, with defending champions Real Madrid priced at 12/1 alongside Napoli.
So the betting odds believe that Liverpool will edge past Madrid and stand a better chance of going all the way this season than the defending champs from Spain.
It’s going to be another monumental match against Madrid but if Liverpool came come through the two-legged tie victorious, then they could pave the way for another memorable run in the Champions League. It would certainly be a welcome distraction from their poor Premier League form and give the supporters something to shout about during the second half of the season.
