Liverpool New Boy Szoboszlai: Ready for a New Role?

An Unexpected Solution?

Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool’s talented midfielder, hints that he’s flexible about his positioning. The Reds have been urgently looking for a fresh anchor in the midfield, especially with the looming departure of Fabinho to Al Ittihad. However, the solution might be closer to home than we think. Szoboszlai, in a recent conversation with The Daily Mail, expressed his openness to the idea.

“I just want to be on the pitch!” Szoboszlai shared.

“But as a number eight, a number 10… if I have to slide back a little bit to take the ball as a No.6? No problem. I want to be more towards the goal but, yeah, I’m a box-to-box (midfielder) I would say!”

While the 22-year-old’s skill is undeniable, a deep-lying role at Liverpool is not for the faint-hearted. The role demands the player to be the steadfast anchor, allowing others to push forward assertively. This spot was occupied immaculately by Fabinho for nearly half a decade at Anfield. So, is Szoboszlai truly fit for such a task? On an international scale, he might not be the first name that springs to mind for this role.

However, reading between the lines, it seems Manager Jurgen Klopp may have a different approach with the incoming midfielders. Rather than sticking to traditional roles, versatility appears to be the name of the game. Alexis Mac Allister, another dynamic talent, has also taken on deeper positions in the past.

Moreover, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold adapting to a fluid role, Klopp might not be seeking a typical No.6. That said, someone needs to be there alongside Trent, orchestrating play. Presently, the choices seem to lean towards Thiago Alcantara or Stefan Bajcetic.

Future Strategy: A Balance of Skill & Position

While Szoboszlai certainly has the knack for that killer pass and goal, he seems more suited closer to the opposition’s box. However, his recent revelations do offer a fresh perspective on Klopp’s potential tactics.

The days ahead are sure to bring more clarity, but for now, Liverpool’s midfield dynamics and Szoboszlai’s role in it remains an intriguing topic of discussion.
