Manchester United vs. Liverpool: A Classic Premier League Showdown

Man of the Match: Alexis Mac Allister’s Mixed Blessing

This particular man of the match award is far less heartwarming than those that have been delivered to the man more recently. Simply put, Manchester United and their low block enterprise should have been dealt with in the one sided first half, with the visitors absolutely dominating every area of the game. The reds final ball, decision, or shot, was often too frustrating and allowed the plucky men of Old Trafford to gatecrash a result that should have been way beyond their limited abilities. Throughout the game, the Argentina World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister, was very good, however, his control of the middle ground required more clinical work ahead of him. If this game had of been won and the plethora chances taken, then we would have been marvelling at the perfect performance of the former Brighton man, yet if not for his steady second half showing, there simply would not have been a man of the match award to be given to any Liverpool player.

Liverpool’s Title Hopes Remain Bright

I still believe Liverpool Football Club will win the 2023/24 Premier League title, as I do not see a way in which either Manchester City or Arsenal will not drop points. The return of Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, and Trent Alexander Arnold, will deliver rejuvenation to a team that needs more ingenuity and creativity. Ali may well have kept out one of the United goals, Trent may have delivered something extraordinary to end the contest early on, whereas, Diogo may well have had a field day against such a poor United defence. Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil stood above all others today and they need reinforcements to take this group to the finish line. The positional sense and territorial advantage that was attained by Klopp’s men (in a dominant first half), was largely due to the 25-year-old Argentine, who ran the show without breaking sweat. The lack of real urgency came back to bite, which meant this occasions most outstanding performer was needed to orchestrate a comeback, something that still seems unbelievable.

Upcoming Challenges and the Road Ahead

This coming week will see Atalanta entertained in the Europa League quarter finals first leg, before Crystal Palace arrive at Anfield next Sunday. Between here and then, much recalibration will be needed in a wounded group, though in the case of the signing of the summer, Alexis Mac Allister, he simply needs to continue what he has been doing and hope that others can reach close to his level of play.

Do not be too disheartened, as stumbles do not always end in a fall. This team can win all their games and see what happens. I truly sense that with seven games to go, that is what will happen and our closest competitor will be the ones that fall.

Next up is the Italians and they may well be on the end of something sinister, as that is what this team can deliver.

Pre-match Prediction;
Manchester United 2 – 3 Liverpool
