Filip Jörgensen & The Long-Term Successor to Alisson

As the dust settles on a disastrous week within the Liverpool FC universe, so begins the count down to what comes next. A legendary manager will be leaving the building for one last time is just over a month, whereas the new Sporting CEO and Director of Football will be preparing for the restructuring of the various tiers, for both the on and off field operations. Ultimately, this historical club is in brilliant shape, with the groundwork laid for a tremendous next phase. Five or six first team players likely to be moved on in the summer, as the likes of Thiago Alcântara, Joël Matip, and Adrián, all whittle down the final days of their respective contracts. Joining those likely departures will be another select few, with Kostas Tsimikas and Caoimhin Kelleher being the assets that may be sold on. I believe that both Luis Díaz Mohamed Salah could also be candidates for a summer sale, however, their own futures are very reliant upon the new manager’s wishes and whether each player is open to extending their current deals.

Why is Caoimhin Kelleher Likely to be Sold on This Summer…?

It is the Liverpool deputy goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, who is more prominent current player in this piece, as a man that has enjoyed a very fine season, but will likely want to find a new setting next season, one that allows him to take on the number jersey. To remain on Merseyside would surely see the 12-cap Republic of Ireland international falling in behind the world’s greatest goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, once more. The subsequent need (in the scenario that allows the 25-year-old to leave), would be to recruit a new goalkeeper who can both compete with and back up the Brazilian number one. The pathway to success for any backup keeper is a tricky one, especially when the club retains the elite services of the former Roma stopper. What is clear, however, is that this giant individual is an athlete that is becoming very prone to injuries and may well benefit from a more active stable mate (much like Kelleher this season), in order to extend his own elite level career. Such an endeavour could possibly allow a viable timeline to succession and permit the reds new Sporting Director, Richard Hughes, the chance to target a player that can take on a substantial load and perhaps even increase the level within the goalkeeping ranks.

It does appear that the increasing interest in the Villarreal man could make a potential deal more expensive, though the continuing tightening of profit and sustainability measures means that an opportunity signing could arise. If a fee of €25m could be attained for the outgoing Caoimhin Kelleher, that money could be immediately be reinvested into a younger and perhaps more patient replacement. With a dominating frame and explosive goalkeeping skillset, the Swedish born, Danish international, could represent the ideal recruitment option for a very reasonable fee. The next Liverpool manager would have the ability to offer up all domestic cups and a selection of top tier games, based upon the injuries that may keep Alisson out of the team. Given the age and current standing of the 21-year-old, it may not be a hard sell to entice the future full international stopper to Anfield. Given that the reds current number one will be turning 32-years of age in October of this year, a confident and ambitious signing may well take on the challenge of dethroning the Liverpool legend, given the inevitable regression that will one day ensue. The prestige of representing such a world-renowned club is also a major pull, on top of the likelihood that silverware would be forthcoming.

Many decisions will have to be considered between now and the start of next season, which could well see the ultra-promising Filip Jörgensen, spoken about more and more.
