However, the transition to Iraola’s high-press system presented challenges early on. Bournemouth struggled with the Spaniard’s tactical approach of playing out from the back. Craig references a “3-0 loss to Everton” as an example of how Bournemouth’s new style initially faltered. However, after a “lucky” win over Burnley, Bournemouth began to find their footing. Craig notes, “When it did click, it clicked properly,” signalling their eventual strong run of form to close the season.

Bournemouth’s Tactical Evolution Under Iraola

Under Iraola, Bournemouth has focused on a pressing style akin to Spanish football, and Craig points out how this evolution will be pivotal in their clash against Liverpool. “He did go a little bit more direct,” Craig explains, referencing how this adjustment helped them achieve better results towards the latter part of last season. While Bournemouth’s defense has improved, with players like Senesi & Zabarnyi leading from the back, their attacking options remain a concern.

The loss of key striker Dominic Solanke, who moved to Tottenham, has left a significant void up front. Craig laments, “If we had Solanke, we would have won against Chelsea,” a match Bournemouth lost narrowly despite creating numerous chances. He expresses concern over new striker Evanilson’s lack of confidence, adding, “He’s strong, he’s quick, but he lacks the confidence to put it in the back of the net.”

Bournemouth’s trip to Anfield represents a stern test. Craig remains hopeful, citing how Bournemouth “won six out of seven” matches following their Burnley victory last season. However, he knows that Liverpool presents a much more formidable challenge than Chelsea, emphasising that Bournemouth cannot afford to give Liverpool any head start, saying, “If we do that against Liverpool, we’re getting beat. No two ways about it.”

Key Players and Predictions

One key player to watch for Bournemouth is Semenyo, whom Craig cannot praise enough. “He’s such a strong lad, skilful…the player I’m most worried about losing,” he says, stressing his importance in both midfield and forward roles. Another player Bournemouth will rely on is new signing Julian Araujo, a former Barcelona player. Craig acknowledges Araujo’s potential, though he admits the Mexican international is still “a bit naïve” when it comes to the demands of Premier League football.

Despite the challenges, Craig is optimistic about Bournemouth’s chances against Liverpool. He predicts that Iraola will maintain the same tactical approach used against Chelsea, one that emphasises high pressing and quick recovery. Craig confidently predicts, “I’m going for a 2-1 win.”
