Man of the Match Van Dijk Drives Liverpool to a Clean Sheet Victory
The greatest defender in the world is on a determined mission to establish this ongoing Liverpool regeneration as an unabashed success, whilst driving the side to a new splurge of silverware in the maiden season of the new boss. As a 33-year-old former Celtic defender, Virgil, has retained an elite level of play since his arrival on Merseyside.
Given him ongoing brilliance, there seems to be no reason why the giant leader of Anfield would not be offered a new extension to his shortening contract by the Sporting Director, Richard Hughes. With just two goals conceded in seven Premier League games, the reds look to far more focused and organised in their off ball exploits, whilst learning and implementing the on ball ideals of a new Head Coach.
Against a spirited Crystal Palace team this sunny afternoon, there was a first half which was completely dominated by the visitors, as the twin towers in red, Virgil van Dijk, and his destructive partner, Ibrahima Konaté, repelled just about everything that came their way. After the half time intermission, a renewed hope came into the mindset of the struggling Eagles, as the home support drove their team forward to attempt and grab a goal to level the encounter.

The second half introduction of Jean-Philippe Mateta was the move by his manager, Oliver Glasner, which finally gave the South London team a focal point to work off and around. His bullish presence enabled a period of disruption, one that forced the travelling Liverpool keeper, Alisson Becker, into a number of important saves. His flurry of activity saw him fall foul to a suspected thigh injury, one which forced him off late in the half.
Throughout that spell of pressure, Arne Slot was reliant on his on-pitch leader and glorious skipper, VVD, to command and adjust the troops accordingly to ensure a clean sheet. There has become a common perception that the midfield double pivot of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, have been the sensational pair that has driven this side to the brink of excellence.
I would not disagree with all of that assessment, however, I am entirely confident that the two central defenders of note and the brilliant Brazilian between the sticks, have been the bedrock which has enabled all to flourish ahead of them. The brothers of destruction were once a WWE pair that comprised the monstrous Undertaker and Kane, which is now something that is being replicated by Liverpools own 6ft 4inch pair of defenders.
Our CBs are ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous.

With a ferociously combative and confident display, Ibou was also excellent today, though for me, the overwhelming man of the match was the man mountain who wears the Liverpool armband with distinction. The no.4 of Anfield is the leading player in this 2024/25 Premier League season, which could see both him and his illustrious footballing club receive the ultimate accolades in May of next year.
The hierarchy of LFC has a very easy job on their hands, which is to hand this man of the match a new contract and let him lead Liverpool FC to magnificent glory.
Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction:
