Liverpool Poised for a Title Test as Gakpo Targets Manchester City

Cody Gakpo has issued a rallying cry ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City, declaring the Reds are ready to demonstrate “what we are made of.”

Confidence Builds After European Triumph

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Real Madrid midweek in the Champions League has lifted spirits at Anfield. Arne Slot’s side, already eight points clear of Pep Guardiola’s City in the Premier League after 12 games, approach Sunday’s encounter full of belief. Gakpo, who sealed Liverpool’s second goal against Madrid, believes the team is primed for the challenge ahead.

“It is a massive opportunity, I think against a very good team, one of the best teams in Europe actually (who have been) dominating a lot of games in recent years,” Gakpo remarked. “But this is a massive chance for us to show them what we are made of and that’s what we are planning to do.”

While Liverpool’s form has been stellar, Gakpo emphasised the importance of maintaining focus. “Obviously we are in a good position, you cannot deny that. But I think it’s still early in the season so we are not really looking at the table yet. Obviously, we are aware of the situation but we have to keep winning the games to stay on top.”

Unity Driving Liverpool’s Success

Liverpool’s current dominance has been underpinned by a mix of youthful exuberance and veteran leadership. Gakpo highlighted this balance as a critical factor in their success.

“That’s what we are training for, working hard for, staying calm for as well, and I think that is also a strength of our team: that we are not really getting dragged away in the situation, but we really are focused on the next game ahead and that will be the case now as well.

“I think that is very helpful, also because we have a lot of young players as well. The more experienced players in the team also help us: the players that won already a lot of things, they know how to act in these sort of situations. They help us as well and it’s only good for us.”

Competition Fuelling the Forward Line

Gakpo’s scoring streak—five goals in his last six matches—has heightened the battle for attacking spots within Slot’s team. His goal against Madrid was another reminder of his impact, even as he competes with Luis Díaz, who started the season in scintillating form but has seen his minutes fluctuate recently.

This internal competition, Gakpo insists, is driving the squad forward. Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, he said: “It was a good game, a big result, so very happy with the start but the week is not over yet so we have to keep going.”

Liverpool fans will hope this momentum propels them further as they prepare for one of the season’s most defining encounters.
