Liverpool transfers: Deal for midfielder is ‘getting closer’

With just days remaining of the January transfer window, it’s starting to look like Liverpool won’t be completing any deals this month.

After their recent struggles, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table, Arne Slot might’ve been hoping for further reinforcements as his job continues to hang by a thread.

However, even though there are no signs of any January arrivals, Liverpool could already be planning to bolster their squad in the summer.

According to transfer journalist Nicolo Schira, the Reds are ‘getting closer’ to securing a blockbuster summer signing…

Liverpool ‘getting closer’ to major deal

Whilst a lot of transfer talk has been about potential signings in the front line or in defence, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a major midfield signing.

That major signing could be Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who is expected to secure a major move in the summer.

Schira claims that Liverpool are leading the race to sign the England midfielder and are ‘getting closer’ to a deal:

“Adam Wharton is getting closer to Liverpool from Crystal Palace,” said Schira, “The midfielder has already given his availability to join #LFC with a 5-year contract.”

It’s unlikely that Liverpool are the only team pushing to sign Wharton in the summer. Recent reports have claimed that Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United are all heavily interested too.

Crystal Palace are in a difficult position, which could facilitate a move. Marc Guehi recently departed in a £20m move to Manchester City, whilst head coach Oliver Glasner has confirmed his plans to leave in the summer.

Top-goalscorer Jean Philippe-Mateta is also pushing for an exit before the end of this month, with Nottingham Forest now pushing for a £35m deal.

There’s a belief that Wharton could be the next player to head out of the exit door, with any move likely to cost in the region of £70m.
