Liverpool Transfer News: Mika Godts Emerges as €65m Alternative in Wide Forward Search

Liverpool’s transfer window has a familiar feel to it, plenty of noise, plenty of names, and one obvious priority. The wide forward position needs addressing after Mohamed Salah’s departure, and the latest name pushed into the conversation is Ajax winger Mika Godts.

Credit for the initial report goes to Sebastien Vidal, who says Liverpool are monitoring the situation while Paris Saint-Germain try to get a deal done.

Mika Godts enters Liverpool thinking

According to Vidal, “PSG isn’t letting go of Mika Godts. After the rejection of a first offer of €45M, the Parisian club is preparing a new proposal,” and, crucially for Liverpool, “Ajax is expecting around €65M, while the Belgian winger, already in agreement with Paris, is pushing to speed up the negotiations. Liverpool is also following the file.”

That tells you two things straight away. First, Ajax believe they hold a premium asset. Second, Liverpool are not sitting still while other clubs shape the market around them. This is what competent recruitment departments do. They line up alternatives, they test pricing, and they avoid being cornered into one negotiation.

Bradley Barcola may still be the glamour target, but transfer strategy cannot be built on wishful thinking. If PSG are difficult on one deal and aggressive on another, then Liverpool have to move accordingly. That does not mean panic. It means acting like a serious club.

Wide forward search remains the real issue

There is no mystery about where Liverpool need help. Salah’s exit removed production, threat and reliability from the front line. Replacing those numbers with one signing was always going to be unlikely, so the logic is to target profile and upside rather than pretend there is a direct copy available.

Godts fits the type. He is 21, productive, flexible and already operating under pressure at a club where development is demanded rather than applauded for its own sake. His reported 32 goal contributions for Ajax last season matter, but context matters too. Eredivisie numbers can flatter. Liverpool would need to be certain those outputs translate to a faster, harsher league.

Still, versatility has value. Godts has mainly worked from the left, though he has also been used through the middle and on the right. For Andoni Iraola, that sort of tactical adaptability matters. Liverpool are in a moment where they need attackers who can solve problems across a season, not just decorate a recruitment deck.

Price point makes this a serious decision

At €65m, this is not a development punt. This is major investment. Liverpool can dress it up however they like, but that level of fee puts a player into the category where impact is expected. Not immediately every week, perhaps, but soon enough and clearly enough.

That is why this link is interesting. It suggests Liverpool are prepared to look beyond safe, familiar names and into a market where the upside is high but so is the risk. There is merit in that. There is also danger if the scouting is seduced by aesthetics over certainty.

Richard Hughes still has work to do before his expected exit, and this is part of it. Liverpool’s attack has to be sharpened, simplified and made more dependable. Godts may be one option, Barcola another, and there will be others too. The key point is not which rumour makes the loudest splash. The key point is whether Liverpool sign the right forward for Iraola’s system, at the right price, with the right level of immediate usefulness.

That is the standard. Anything lower is just transfer window theatre.

Our View

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report lands with a shrug more than excitement. Godts may be talented, he may have big upside, and €65m may even be the going rate for a young winger in this market, but fans have heard all this before. Potential is nice. Production at Anfield is better.

The concern is simple. Liverpool do not need another clever idea that looks good in a scouting presentation. They need somebody who can actually take responsibility in games. Salah is gone. That leaves a huge hole in output and personality. Replacing that with another project feels underwhelming.

There is also the usual issue with these links. If the player already has an agreement elsewhere, why are Liverpool in the conversation? Are they genuinely interested, or are they being used to apply pressure? Supporters have become pretty good at spotting the difference.

Barcola, Godts, Diomande, it all starts to blur if nothing gets over the line. Iraola needs players who fit his football, yes, but he also needs certainty before the season begins. Liverpool dropped off badly in 2025-26 and the response cannot be more delay and more maybe.

If Godts arrives and proves people wrong, fine. Nobody will complain if he performs. Right now, though, this feels like another name on a list rather than a signing that changes the mood. And after last season, changing the mood matters nearly as much as changing the team.
