Liverpool Pulled Out of Ibrahim Mbaye Race as PSG Demands Forced Transfer Rethink

Liverpool’s pursuit of Ibrahim Mbaye appears to have ended with Aston Villa moving into pole position to sign the Paris Saint-Germain teenager.

According to RMC Sport, Liverpool had shown significant interest in the 18-year-old during the summer transfer window, but withdrew after PSG’s initial valuation approached €70m.

Villa have subsequently reached an agreement in principle worth €55m, around £47m, with Mbaye expected to undergo a medical before signing a five-year contract, including an option for another season.

For Liverpool, the development raises further questions about their recruitment strategy as the transfer deadline approaches, particularly with Andoni Iraola still requiring additional attacking options.

PSG Valuation Changed Liverpool’s Position

Mbaye has already accumulated 42 senior appearances for PSG despite being only 18, which explains why several leading European clubs have tracked his progress.

Chelsea and RB Leipzig are also reported to have made approaches, although Villa have seemingly moved decisively to secure his signature.

RMC Sport report that Liverpool’s interest cooled when PSG initially demanded a fee approaching €70m. From a purely financial perspective, there is logic behind that decision.

Liverpool have already committed significant resources elsewhere this summer and paying such a substantial sum for a teenager, regardless of his potential, would carry considerable risk.

The complication comes from Villa apparently securing the player for €55m. That represents a meaningful reduction from PSG’s original demands and inevitably raises the question of whether Liverpool should have remained involved long enough to see negotiations develop.

Minteh Pursuit Continues After Mbaye Decision

Liverpool have instead concentrated attention on Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh.

Two offers, worth £50m and £60m, have reportedly been rejected, with Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler publicly expressing his desire to retain the winger.

“Rumours. Rumours.” Hurzeler told reporters. “Let’s see what happens. Again, another example of a player who benefits from the success of the team.

“He benefits for example from hard work from Pascal [Gross], hard work from Jack Hinshelwood, hard work from all the other players.

“And he knows it. Therefore I also think it’s important to understand as a player what you have here, playing for a club like Brighton.

“You have a club that gives you the chance, you team-mates who are really trying to push you, you have a club that is there for you also in tough moments.

“[New Man United signing] Carlos Baleba had so many tough moments when he was here, Minteh also had tough moments, but we were always there for them, always tried to help them, their team-mates are there for them.

“So I think it’s also important for the players to understand what they have here with this club, how the fans are connected, how we are working together.

“It’s difficult to find a similar environment, or better environment, for potential young players. But the same with Minteh, we were successful as a team, that brings attention on him, so let’s see what happens.

“If you ask me if I’ll try to convince him to stay, yes I try to convince him to stay. But can I control everything? No, I can’t control everything.”

Those comments leave the door open, however slightly, for negotiations to continue.

Liverpool Face Crucial Final Transfer Decisions

Minteh is currently sidelined with a leg injury, although reports suggest he would be open to joining Liverpool.

Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr has emerged as another option, with Liverpool making an enquiry over the Senegal international earlier this week.

Liverpool therefore appear to have several routes available. Their decision to walk away from Mbaye becomes easier to understand if PSG were insisting upon close to €70m when discussions took place.

What matters now is what follows.

Iraola needs greater attacking depth and Liverpool cannot afford to spend the closing stages of the window moving between targets without completing the necessary business.

Villa’s apparent agreement for Mbaye at €55m will inevitably attract attention on Merseyside. Liverpool seemingly decided that the economics no longer worked. Their next move will determine whether that judgement ultimately looks disciplined or overly cautious.

Our View

From a Liverpool perspective, this is exactly the sort of transfer story that creates anxiety with the deadline approaching.

Walking away when PSG wanted close to €70m is perfectly understandable. Mbaye is 18 years old and there has to be a limit on what Liverpool will pay for potential. The uncomfortable part is seeing Aston Villa apparently negotiate that price down to €55m while Liverpool are reportedly having £50m and £60m offers rejected for Minteh.

That immediately leaves you wondering whether Liverpool walked away too early.

Perhaps the recruitment team simply rate Minteh considerably higher. If so, fine, back that judgement and get the deal completed. The concern comes from watching one option disappear while another becomes increasingly expensive.

Liverpool have already lost valuable time this summer. Iraola needs attacking reinforcements and there are only so many credible targets available this late in the window.

Sarr provides another possible route, but again there needs to be a clear plan rather than a frantic sequence of bids as the deadline gets closer.

Mbaye could ultimately prove too expensive for what he currently offers. Nobody knows how his career will develop. Yet if Villa complete a €55m deal and Liverpool subsequently pay considerably more for an alternative, supporters will understandably ask why the club did not remain at the negotiating table.

This is where Liverpool’s recruitment department has to deliver. Walking away from a deal can demonstrate discipline. It only looks like good business when the alternative plan actually works.
